Employees documented abuse and filth at LA tiny home villages. Officials did next to nothing.
More than 550 incident reports detail assaults, drug use, unsanitary conditions and more across a dozen villages designed to shelter and support unhoused people.
Deep gratitude goes to my fellow reporters Marcos Franco,
Tristan Longwell, Brenda Mwingira, Quinae Austin, Jonathan Chung, Sydney Wanguhu, Bryan Antunez & Emmanuel Villarruel, who worked on the first investigation: bit.ly/tinyhomesinvestigation
Thanks to my sources; editors Jenna Chandler @zenagrossa.bsky.social @eedugdale.bsky.social @rina.bsky.social; LAPP's design/web/audience team (like Alyson Yee & @adelcidlugo.bsky.social); and publisher Matthew Tinoco for all your help.
Residents at LA's tiny homes hoped to find a safe place to get back on their feet. Instead, many said they faced harsh safety & health hazards that made life harder.
Sincere thanks to judges Mark Allen, Jay Wang (@acesediting.bsky.social), Samantha Masunaga & @juliepatel.bsky.social (@aajaofficial.bsky.social AAJA-LA). It was a pleasure selecting the Henry Fuhrmann Mentor Award winners @hannahbae.bsky.social & Matthew Crowley @copyjockey.bsky.social with you!
This nifty graphic created by @notus.com's social media whizzes captures one of my key points.

What would you fix about American higher education? @notusperspectives.bsky.social asked the panelists below & me. I argued for more independent thinking.

Investigating LAPD-press incidents in Los Angeles on Saturday. No doubt LAPD violated court injunction. Just a question of how bad.
So far I think only minor injuries to press. Still confirming. Not a passing grade regardless.
Preliminary leads in blue at top. Please share evidence if you have!
