One idea we're keen to explore: a differentiated guaranteed strike price for fuels that achieve close to 100% carbon intensity reduction. This would incentivise 2nd generation fuels and e-fuels - the fuels that will be central to the SAF mandate post-2030. 4/5

That's why AEF responded to the UK Government's consultation on the revenue certainty mechanism within the SAF mandate. The detail here really matters for what gets built and funded. 3/5

A "solution" that drives deforestation isn't really a solution at all. The aviation industry needs to be honest about what counts as genuinely low-carbon fuel - not just fuel that ticks a box. 2/5

UK ‘green’ jet fuel imports linked to illegal Amazon deforestation A major supplier of ‘green’ airline fuel to the UK has sourced beef fat linked to illegal Amazon deforestation.

🧵 Getting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) right isn't just about using any alternative fuel — it's about using the right ones. A new report from @unearthednews.bsky.social shows why this distinction matters more than ever. 1/5

AEF signed this letter as we believe that weakening the EU ETS will only further strengthen aviation’s dependence on fossil fuels. The ETS is there to help transition the industry away from kerosene and towards a more sustainable business model.

A colossal white elephant: Government selects most disruptive and costly option for Heathrow expansion - Aviation Environment Federation On Tuesday 25th of November, the Government announced its selection of Heathrow Airport Limited’s (HAL) proposal as the basis for progressing plans for the third runway project. If approved, this …

Heathrow expansion means more planes, more flight paths and more noise. Over 2 million people could face increased aircraft noise if a 3rd runway is built and many communities are unaware their daily environment could be about to change forever.

Feedstocks for sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are supposed to be carefully vetted. But while you should in theory be able to trace a feedstock through its lifecycle, the reality can be a lot murkier. Meeting the UK's SAF mandate involves convoluted supply chains and opaque certification. 3/4

The short answer: beef tallow - a waste product used to make jet fuel - is being sourced from farms linked to illegal deforestation in a Brazilian conservation area, as reported by UnEarthed. The longer answer involves global supply chain risks and life cycle analysis. 2/4

Heathrow already carries £17.6bn in debt, and expansion means stacking billions more risk onto an overstretched balance sheet.

Expansion isn’t “investment” — it’s a balance-sheet gamble with passengers footing the bill. #NoThirdRunway

Stop touristification! 🛑

Over tourism, not only kicks residents out of their homes, turning cities into tourist playgrounds, but also relies on air traffic and airport expansion.

Less tourism, less planes 👉 more homes, a better life!

Should all contrails be avoided?

A new study argues it’s less effective to avoid all contrail formation, and instead, action should be taken to target the percentage of flights that are expected to cause significant amounts of warming contrails. 1/3

Breek!

Schiphol Watch is hopeful that this will cause a fundamental shift in how aviation noise and the rights of the local residents will balanced:
"The question is no longer how many flights Schiphol "needs," but how much noise Schiphol is permitted to produce within legal limits.” 2/2

Government consultation on biomass sustainability - Aviation Environment Federation AEF responded Gov consultation on how biomass should be defined as a potential fuel feedstock in the UK SAF Mandate.

Using plants and crops for fuel feedstocks is inefficient and risks indirect land-use change. Tweaking the SAF Mandate to allow more biomass feedstocks is a bad idea, for many reasons.

We set them all out in our consultation response.
