Today's illustration for my dark fantasy novel in progress, the one about Mercy and her lover Gabriel. The first book is mostly their teen to young adult years, ending when they are both adults.
Children are vulnerable human beings who need care, protection, and guidance but they are not property and a legal and social system that treats them like they are encourages abuse and mistreatment.

Her Holiness has served alongside her companions, the Hand of God and Sage who shepherded her on her holy pilgrimage, for the last 133 years. with few exceptions, her reign is one of peace and prosperity. though every act and word and miracle worked by the saints is carefully preserved, there are few who can claim they know the woman well. she is beyond humanity, ever listening for God's voice. it is said that the only people alive who have seen her face unveiled are her pilgrimage members and the young Lamb, Aneska. she and Aneska are not blood kin, but she has raised the Lamb as a mother, as she did once for the Fallen Lamb. she has receded from the public eye since his death, her energy spent keeping the cataclysmic winter at bay until Aneska was ready to embark on her own pilgrimage. some years ago, she personally spared the life of a boy marked for death. she would later gift him a new name— Penance— and a new life as a priest. he owes everything to her.
