The dog is lying on a lap with red and black plaid pyjamas in a cozy living room setting. In the background, there is a television, a red wall, and an open doorway leading to a brightly lit hallway.

There aren’t many hard and fast rules in this house but if a dog falls asleep on you, you’re not allowed to get up until it wakes up.

A stout fly with yellow and black markings that make it look like a stinging insect. The eyes are a giveaway that this is no hornet. It’s standing on small purple flowers. Front view.

Look, a hornet! Or is it?

Batesian mimcry is when a harmless species evolves to look like one that’s well defended. This fly cannot sting, but its appearance might scare away a predator.

A black insect with very skinny waist, but normal sized abdomen, and thorax is resting on a purple flower. The photo is a bit over exposed because of the direct light of a setting sun

Being up in DC reminds me that most of the US doesn’t get year-round access to gorgeous insects like we do in the deep southern US. Here’s a Fraternal Potter Wasp, Eumenes fraternus, gathering some nutrients before sunset last weekend.

Macro photo in nearly front view of a frosty metallic green fly with enormous eyes and yellow legs standing on a green leaf. The background is natural evenly blurred green.

I offset the fly to one side in this photo to leave room for any motivational prose you wish to add.

A secluded meeting space deep in the forests of Nagaland within the Pulie Badze Wildlife Sanctuary.

I was so so excited to come across this while heading back after a collection trip back in 2021, although it was during an unplanned detour !

Happy to chat about wasps anytime🐝❤️

Hii..My favourite ones are the wasps, especially hornets. Not many people are so fond of them, even I wasn't earlier, but ended up liking them. Wasps are so diverse, have complex behaviours, and very very intriguing that way.
