illustration inspired by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman's 1891 short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" depicting a woman touching sickly yellow torn wallpaper on a wall while shadowy hands reach toward her. There is another tall shadow of a figure on the wall and both figures look toward the viewer.

"The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight."

I made a "Yellow Wallpaper" piece back in 2017, but I re-read the story over the weekend and wanted to try again. Much happier with this version 🖤

“It’s a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what they’re not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,” Wyle says. “You take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where you’re now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who aren’t accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.

“Second point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eye—and only shooting from the point of view of a human being that’s present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. There’s no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you can’t leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as we’re on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you don’t get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, it’s going to pop.”

Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. “Fourth point: The election went the other way,” he says with a shrug. “We could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth point—this is essentially competence porn. You’re watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you don’t know how to do it, and you’re so fucking glad that they’re there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. You’re so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.”

Cover art for the 2025 special edition of Howl's Moving Castle published by Greenwillow Books (HarperCollins). Features Sophie and Howl standing in a flower field beneath a grassy hill. Sophie wears a pink dress and has a glowing staff that sparks magic. She has red hair and a soft smile. Howl clutches his chest which also sparks magic. He holds a guitar and wears a red coat with trailing coat trails. The moving castle stomps along the top of the hill in front of a sunset sky with magical blue smoke drifting behind it.

The two truths:
1) There is nothing wrong with porn, let people safely make it, let people safely enjoy it.
2) If you let people define porn as bad, authoritarians will ALWAYS expand the definition until their hands are around your neck.

I don't comment on a ton of her posts but Anni is one of my fav artists out there. I've loved Transfusions since I started reading it over a decade ago and now I can't wait to see this new story evolve now that TF has finished. These characters look so intriguing!

I saw a pod of orcas swimming alongside the ferry so I'm all better now 🫍

On the bus, waiting for the ferry and there's a guy behind me having a loud constant phonecall while my mom watches garbage conservative think pieces on Facebook next to me.

I have to constantly shame her into not turning on her volume.

I'm in hell.

But also, why aren't tv shows interesting anymore??? Why are characters so shallow and boring???? Where are all my diverse shows with challenging nuanced characters???????!!!?!??

Clown behavior 🤡

2 weeks ago 0 0 1 0

Like the threads the writers are telling aren't even going to be wrapped up in a season! It'll take multiple to tell a good story! But they want it all solved perfectly in 6 eps and no character can be bad or wrong or complicated during that. If the character is unlikable they're 'problematic'

2 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

Yesss this is me every week. It's like they all got so used to being spoon fed stories bite by bite over the course of 6-8 episode season that they don't have the ability to let a complex and nuanced story see itself through.

2 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

Yes this!!! I've been doing a million other creative things so not surprised the writing has slowed haha

but I love that description of it. The porch light will always be on for me 🥹🥹🥹
