This 77-year-old climate activist should never have been jailed – and now faces a Kafkaesque struggle to get out | Zoe Williams A failure of justice, and draconian Tory law, put Gaie Delap in prison. A failure of government is keeping her there, writes Guardian columnist Zoe Williams

World breaches 1.5C warming target in 2024 while 78-yr-old climate activist Gaie Delap languishes in a UK prison for having demonstrated to 'Stop Oil'. And yet there are people who continue to think that we, in the West, live in rational lib democracies www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

BREAKING: Dr Patrick Hart is the first working GP to be sent to prison for nonviolent direct action. Sentenced to 12 months for a @just-stopoil.bsky.social action against ExxonMobil petrol pumps.

Why did he do it?

Because he's seen children die at the hands of the fossil fuel industry.

What's worse is that this is a more severe punishment than some of Santos' previous oil spills.

FWIW, those laws were primarily a response to activists blocking roads and abseiling off a bridge out the front of an oil and gas conference.

Activists did also spray paint the Santos HQ (not the first time) the day after (or maybe two) but things were already in motion at that stage.

Gas giant Santos fined $10,000 over 'negligible' oil spill off WA The energy giant has pleaded guilty to causing an oil spill in 2022, that leaked 25,000 litres of oil off WA's north-west coast. Santos will pay a $10,000 fine and $9,700 in court costs for failing to...

Santos to pay less than a dollar per litre of oil spilled. Or $3333.33 per dead dolphin.

Withholding Luigi's manifesto on grounds that it might inspire copycats was always disingenuous because prosecutors are going to introduce it as evidence anyway. The truth is media didn't want to anger their law enforcement sources

Queensland has more coal mines operating now than ever before.

Let that sink in.

Climate disaster...and also shows BHP lied about royalties making miners leave the state. @australiainstitute.org.au

Goodbye, APA! UniSuper sells leftover $340m stake in pipelines giant It’s been a block bonanza for fund managers and investment banks this week, as founders and institutional investors seek to cash out before Christmas.

UniSuper, APA’s biggest shareholder for more than a decade, has now sold all of its shares in the company.

This comes after 1000+ UniSuper members called on the super fund to take a public stand against APA's fracking plans earlier this year. #climate

In the past 30 days, over 75% of South Australia’s energy came from renewables, an incredible leap from 0% not long ago.

The graph below showing this transition is fascinating.

Amazingly, some reading this, particularly over on Twitter, will be furious about it.

I have spent a lot of time reporting on, and writing about, fossil fuel sponsorship. It's very rare you get a working demonstration of why this matters. This double page spread in the Herald Sun was just sent to me with calls for more gas extraction -- sponsored by the gas industry.

🤡 @albomp.bsky.social didn’t just do a swifty on @tanyaplibersekmp.bsky.social, he’s done the bidding of the Minerals Council, WA mining mafia and Logging Lobby.

Labor was elected on a climate mandate yet here we are. An utter failure of a government.

TV host clashes with climate activist over anti-coal blockade Rising Tide community organiser Zack Schofield has pushed for the end of an industry which contributes to “climate breakdown”. Approximately 170 climate protestors have been arrested, and an inbound ship was forced to turn back at the Port of Newcastle as Rising Tide's blockade continues. Mr Schofield defended the actions of protestors, saying the group is demanding an end to new coal and gas expansions in Australia due to the climate crisis. AM Agenda host Laura Jayes clashed with the Rising Tide organiser over the group’s decision to blockade the world’s largest coal port.

Zack from @risingtideaus.bsky.social has been doing some great media interviews in the last few days.

Case in point is this Sky News interview.

To put the just-agreed New Collective Quantified Goal at COP29 in some context...

$300,000,000,000 - NCQG "by 2035"

$2,440,000,000,000 - global military spending in 2023

That's EIGHT TIMES larger
