Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, 20/4/26. Warwickshire and Essex play out their county championship cricket game against the backdrop of a building site complete with a massive crane towering above them. One side of the stadium is being redeveloped with the building of a hotel and new spectator seating but for the present fans can enjoy watching activity on the building site as well as the cricket. Warwickshire won a close, exciting game by 41 runs.

I did a rough test print to check some details whilst cutting the block for my last linocut, ‘The Kiss’. Rather than throwing it away I put it to one side and a week or so later started to ‘doodle’ on it using a fineliner pen. I liked the finished ‘drawing’ so much I stuck it into my sketch book and am considering cutting another printing block based on the design.

The Peaky Blinders display on Hill Street, Birmingham, UK, has recently been updated following the release of the film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (2026). Hunting the Wren is a haunting Irish folk song featured in the film’s soundtrack, re-recorded by Lankum and Grian Chatten of Fontaines D.C. It was chosen to play out Tommy Shelby's final chapter in the movie. The song refers to the "Wrens of the Curragh," a group of women who lived in poverty in Ireland in the 19th century, drawing a parallel to the themes of the film. The display features reproductions of original artworks by Jon Jones, an artist born and bred in Birmingham. Peaky Blinders was originally a TV series created by Steven Knight, also born in Birmingham, based on a gang of infamous criminals operating in the city during the 1890s.

Lilleshall Abbey, Shropshire, UK. Founded in about 1148, this Augustinian abbey became a private residence after the Reformation, and was severely damanged in the Civil War during a Parliamentarian siege. Despite that, much of the church survives, and is viewable from gallery level. There is also a lavishly sculpted processional door and other cloister buildings (English Heritage).
