We’re one step closer to understanding the sperm whale ‘alphabet’ Scientists are learning that sperm whales communicate in ways that may mirror human language.

We have no business sharing the world with whales. My second favourite creatures after equines 🐋

Red hair gene favoured by natural selection over last 10,000 years, study finds Scientists suggest red hair and fair skin were favoured for vitamin D efficiency in study focused on whether human evolution plateaued after advent of agriculture

People with red hair may be pleased to learn that they appear to be winners from an evolutionary perspective.

A large genetics study has revealed that, in Europe, the gene for red hair has been actively selected for more than 10,000 years.

Please stop with the AI BS! 👿

5 days ago 0 0 1 0

IMO the two biggest dangers of AI are that it affirms everything you think and that it destroys your critical thinking.

And each reinforces the other. The more you lean on it for your thinking, the more it reinforces it. And the more it reinforces it, the more you rely on it.

Very bad.

For 56 of the 94 fungal species assessed in this study, there's still insufficient data to reliably evaluate extinction risk.

A reminder of how much fungal diversity remains understudied, and how urgently better knowledge is needed for conservation.

The shared excitement over NASA’s recent mission compared to the general indifference to SpaceX missions speaks to the power of something seen as the product of communal human effort rather than just the ego and avarice of one obnoxious dork.

A photography of a velvet worm crawling on a moss-covered trunk. The animal is worm-like, with many soft pairs of legs and a pair of long, segmented antennae. All over the animal's body, there are hundreds of multi-coloured lumps, which resemble dress sequins.

I recently discovered this incredible creature while on a night walk in the NZ bush. Known as a 'Velvet Worms', this adorable predator immobilises prey with organic glue fired from turrets on its head!

Oh... and they are basically unchanged in about 400 million years!

AI is the boss at this retail store. What could go wrong? Andon Market, designed and managed by an AI system but staffed by two human employees, opened Friday in San Francisco.

An entire store run by AI. It picked the location, decided what to sell, hired the employees, and even hired the artist that painted the store's mural.

Some things are working well, but some are not. It has lied, lied about lying, and hired someone in Afghanistan.

Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?

Bloody hell. Researchers invented a disease, published two fake papers to see if LLM’s would ingest them and kick them up as fact — and then it broke containment and all the major AI’s bought in. Information pollution.

CDC delays publishing report showing covid vaccine benefits The acting CDC director cited concerns with the methodology, but the design has long been used to test vaccine effectiveness.

Temporary CDC “Director” Jay Bhattacharya is a non-practicing MD, economist, and whiny little shitbird with a persecution complex.

He has ZERO education, training or experience in epidemiological study design and has no business at deciding what methodology should be used to evaluate vaccines.
