For sure... and I think that's the rub with Dundon. He's not actually wealthy enough for this. He couldn't even fully fund the purchase of the team - he still owes 20% of the sales price.

It's like he bought a racecar, but can't afford the gas. Not a well thought out plan.

At the time of the sale, Cuban cited the financial pressure of funding an NBA contender as his primary motivation for the transaction. He said it had been too much of a financial burden for a "middle-class billionaire" like himself.

Mark Cuban sold his stake in the Mavericks primarily because running an NBA franchise well was too expensive. Instead of being shamelessly cheap or exploitative, he got out of the game altogether.

This is not good.

Deconstructing infrastructure built to protect people erodes public trust in the City of Portland and its willingness and ability to center the lives of human beings over the dents and scrapes of cars. This is a step backwards and runs counter to the City's Vision Zero goals.

When X was my primary news source there were all kinds of crises all the time. Every time I opened the app I learned about a new crisis.

Now that Bsky is my primary news source, it seems like the world has really chilled out a ton. Not many crises going on. I like it better this way.

Start Here - Portland Rides Portland E-Bike Rebate Program: Get up to $1,600 off a new Standard Class 1 e-bike, plus $300 for accessories.

Portland just kicked of an e-Bike Rebate program, but only for folks making up to 60% AMI for now.

What I'd love to see is a car/bike exchange program. Turn in your old gas vehicle, get a free e-bike.

Episode 98: Elevators with Stephen Smith (Incentives Series pt. 2) Elevators in the U.S. and Canada cost 3–5x as much as in other high-income countries. Stephen Smith explains how our well-intentioned standards make cities less safe and accessible.

Here's a 75 minute deep dive, really good stuff.

Even as I consider myself a single-stair evangelist, I believe elevator reform could have a much bigger, much wider positive impact on more people's lives... especially with an aging population like we have.

Aging-in-place doesn't have to mean staying in one big, empty single family home until you die.

If "place" = "community" then aging-in-place requires communities with the diversity of housing options to support people as the move from one phase of life to the next.

This is why you fight back.

Incredibly proud of REACH for standing up for their residents and for standing up for what’s right.

The safety record of two stair buildings speaks for itself. We don't have egress-related deaths in new construction. We created these regulations that basically eliminated the thing we wanted to eliminate.

I can't see a *good* argument for taking something that works and making it more restrictive.

But when you realize those “birds” are actually highly sophisticated government drones, it becomes clear that each “death” costs the government millions in damaged tech and sunk R&D costs. Suddenly the requirements begin to make sense.

Call it CIA-safe glazing.

Friends: I am thrilled to share that I am running for Portland City Council in District 3! After a lifetime of questioning authority - and leading policy, and managing teams in public service for over a decade - the time feels right to ask Portlanders to trust me with a very important job 🧵

I’m not sure you could “read the room” or “read the city” and more poorly than to sit up on the dais and float the idea that city councilors should be armed at public meetings.

Emergency Notice on Blazer’s Edge Night Time is almost done and requests are unfulfilled.

I know it's not a great time for everyone to donate, but I wanted to make a request... if you can spare $12 to send a kid to a Blazers game - or more - that would be amazing! Blazer's Edge (but let's be honest, it's Dave) sends kids to a game every year: www.blazersedge.com/trail-blazer...

There’s something incredibly gross about draining PCEF - a voter-backed initiative to equitably fund clean energy and climate resilience for our most impacted communities - to subsidize a billionaire’s unnecessary renovation of one of the most sustainable arenas in the world.

1803 Fund acquires Portland grain silos in $70 million investment for Black community The Phil Knight-backed organization expects to generate hundreds of jobs and nearly $700 million in economic impact through redevelopment of historic Albina properties.

These grain silos were parte of the site of my terminal architecture school studio project in 2010. They were the backdrop for an outdoor amphitheater.

Curious what 1803 Fund has in mind!

Seattle architects: how do you get midrise wood apartments permitted on streets that don't meet the aerial access requirements of Appendix D of the Seattle Fire Code? I see an exception for Type I/II construction, but I'm sure I've seen five-over-ones on tight streets in Capitol Hill or Belltown.
