Call for Applications: HOTCUS Annual Conference, PG/ECR Work-in-Progress workshop.

Up to 4 participants will be selected to share a piece of writing of up to 8,000 words for intensive discussion and feedback from Professor Bailey and other workshop participants. This piece of work can be a dissertation chapter or an article.
The workshop will provide a supportive space for PhD students and early career scholars to present and receive feedback on chapters, articles, or detailed research proposals.
On the afternoon of Wednesday 1st July, a PG/ECR work-in-progress workshop will be held with the 2026 HOTCUS plenary speaker, Professor Beth Bailey.

The day will open with a keynote lecture from Emma Stone MacKinnon (University It concludes with a roundtable reflecting on the Declaration’s place in contemporary history and historiography.
The twentieth century offers a critical vantage point from which to trace how these founding ideals were invoked, reinterpreted, and resisted, revealing the ongoing struggle over the meaning of the American nation.
The principles proclaimed within the Declaration of Independence in 1776, of liberty, equality, and self-government, remained central to American political culture, yet were repeatedly contested by social upheaval, political realignment, and global transformation.
The 2026 HOTCUS Winter Symposium examines how nation, citizenship, and freedom were defined and redefined across the twentieth-century United States.

The CfP is now open for the 2026 HOTCUS Annual Conference (University of Manchester, 1-3 July 2026).
Please email all submissions to events.hotcus@gmail.com by midnight, UK time on 25 March, 2026.
Successful applicants agree to submit a short report within two months of the research activity for publication on the HOTCUS website and to acknowledge the award in future publications.
All applications must be submitted to membershipsecretary.hotcus@gmail.com by 1 March, 2026.
Applications may be made for up to £500 for research expenses, including the cost of hiring a research assistant and/or research travel to take place within 12 months after the date of application. There are no residency restrictions and travel may be to, or within, any country.
HOTCUS welcomes applications from doctoral students and recent PhD graduates not yet in academic employment, as well as those on short-term (less than three years), fractional, or hourly paid contracts working on any area of twentieth-century United States history.

Applications for the 2026 HOTCUS Article Prize and Early Career Article Prize are now open. Both awards recognise outstanding research on twentieth-century US history published in peer-reviewed journals during the 2025 calendar year, and each comes with a £100 prize.
