NIH review is broken. Criticizing absence of items that were previously in the grant and were criticized back then so I took them out. Also criticized absence of expertise after I had to remove foreign expert collaborator (forced by NIH and explained in introduction). No consistency, pure lottery.

For U.S. medical researchers, shrinking labs and bare budgets are the new reality The Trump administration has slashed the number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, with far fewer focused on women, cancer and mental health.

Very good (if tragic) story from the Washington Post

Bhattacharya, Letai & other politicals at NIH keep trying to to say all at NIH is fine, because they spent the full budget last year. This well researched article from @carolynyjohnson.bsky.social explains exactly why many scientists are still struggling. www.washingtonpost.com/science/2026...

Because burden on reviewers is
high they do not increase
numbers of reviewers but make it
more difficult to apply? I know ppl who had great scores but were not funded. So now banned for 2 years?
At NIH reviews are so arbitrary now that even great applications resubmitted are not discussed.

It is. That’s why RFK cancelled all research on it. No funding.

We were just talking about cucumbers and this very question. I think the tomato focus is that it looks much more like a classic fruit - very red, obvious seeds etc. The cucumber is just water masquerading as a reproductive strategy.

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

This is precisely the sort of advance that Bobby Measles is trying to prevent when he cuts funding for mRNA-based vaccines and treatments.
