The fish-scale like things on her isn't actually a part of her body (or the vein like coral), but the scales specifically is a type of light-weight armor. This is what she wears casually (i.e. in her homeland) but she has a fuller set for when she has to leave for diplomatic reasons.

The resources tend to be scarce, and they tend to be a more isolated sort of people. Additionally, they tend to have a different version to sleep than most others- between half-living hibernation or inbetween that and a longer sleep cycle.
