Tired
I am so tired of waiting,
Aren't you,
For the world to become good And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two - And see what worms are eating
At the rind.
Langston Hughes

Politicians who are not part of the research process may not realise that it is in the nature of research that almost all of it is unsuccessful at least in terms of making change in the world. No doubt there is room for improvement but if you set out to eliminate ‘waste’ you eliminate success too.

Cool. We’ve ripped up the social contract with young people, so they can’t afford to buy a home, or settle down and have children or ever retire. Let’s now force half of them to be trained only to do jobs they will hate in order to stop people from other countries moving here for a better life.

Nothing has prepared you to live under Trump 2 as much as growing up in 1980s/90s Latin America. It was exactly like that! The sudden announcements changing everything, the overwhelming uncertainty, the sheer vertigo and whiplash. Plus, the sense that democracy is fragile and could collapse...

When tech bros talk about ‘existential risk’ they are themselves the hazard, of course.

Goldman Sachs asks in biotech research report: 'Is curing patients a sustainable business model?' Goldman Sachs warns sales from the most successful disease treatments are difficult to maintain.

I can hardly think of a better example of the moral decay in modern health care than a Goldman analyst noting that biotech cures for diseases like hepatitis are cool and all, until their success diminishes the business opportunity for pharmaceutical manufacturers.

A report on the massacre, commissioned by Home Secretary Douglas Hurd, found that understaffing and telecommunication problems may have hampered the police response to the developing incident. The killings were committed using legally owned handguns and semi-automatic rifles, and the report stated that existing firearms legislation should be more stringent. Consequently, the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 was passed in the wake of the massacre, banning ownership of semi-automatic centre-fire rifles and restricted the use of shotguns with a capacity of more than three cartridges.

What happened after a mass shooting in the UK in 1986 (the Hungerford Massacre).
