Lee and Daniel are joined by returning guest Cam Sullivan to continue their look into post-Tarantino (& frankly, at this point, post-Ritchie) crime films, with Joe Carnahan's "Smokin' Aces" (2006). Come help us stain Buddy Israel's jacket with various bodily fluids.

Matthews is one of our unlikeliest real ones, he's the son of South African Quakers and left the country rather than serve in the apartheid military

"Someone tried to strangle Sneako", "Clavicular just had a drug overdose", I refuse to believe that understanding any of these headlines is better for me than chain-smoking

he showed up to a mostly empty auditorium, got heckled by anti war protesters opposing the war he just humiliatingly failed to negotiate an end to, erika kirk stood him up, and he tried to explain catholicism to the pope. the only way he could’ve had a worse time is if he pissed his pants up there.

A four-panel comic. In panel 1, two people are standing in the forest, wearing backpacks. The red-haired person says "I've never hiked with a naturalist before! I'm excited. I hope I brought enough water." The brown-haired person says "I'm sure you did. Let's go!"

In panel 2, the brown-haired person points at various nature features. "Look, a red eft! It's the teenaged form of the Eastern Newt. Ooh, wintergreen! Wanna smell it? I hear a Chestnut-sided Warbler. Glacial till. Rubble of the last ice age!"

In panel 3, the naturalist points to more nature items. "This forest seems early successional. Aw, a leafcutter bee with a piece of leaf! Wow, deer poor! Wow, fungi growing out of the deer poop!!" The red-haired person says "Okay, but..."

In panel 4, the red-haired person continues, "It's been an hour and we've walked three feet." The brown-haired person exclaims, looking excited, "Three amazing feet!"

Sometimes you make a new comic, and sometimes you redraw an old one because you lost the original high res file 😅

I know someone who works at the intersection of federal funding and advanced medical research, and this is absolutely correct. We will never be able to quantify the amount of suffering and death inflicted by these people, but it will be with us for a long time.

"Hey, if you're feeling like life has passed you by and you're too old to start something new, remember that John Brown was 55 before he killed his first pro-slavery settler in the Kansas Territory. It's never too late to follow your dreams."

If you don't have internal accountability, you can't pull off external accountability.

Which imo is why Dems couldn't stop a known rapist like Trump in the first place

there are so many consequences of everyday people not really understanding how journalism works and people on here thinking there was some sort of massive media coverup of Eric Swalwell being a monster fundamentally is rooted in total misunderstanding of what real reporting requires.

Joe Rogan spent the entire election cycle campaigning for the far-right candidate, now he says he wants a "logical centrist government". Bro, Kamala Harris WAS the centrist, which you would have seen if you weren't a racist piece of shit who went out of your way to ratfuck her comms team.

Kudos to Humanities and Social Sciences Communications for retracting the paper based on egregiously flawed "national IQ" data, and doing it so quickly: paper published in January, retracted in April. Let's hope Springer now retracts all the other NIQ papers in its journals

I used to do “you might not mean to be racist but…” videos, short funny (imo) takes on subtly racist statements or behaviors.

It’s completely irrelevant now lol smh. The racism and bigotry are very very obvious.

Got to second this one. This was an insightful and informative read. It dis into a lot of stuff I used to fall for in relation to what I knew about Japan and its culture, and sometimes still catch myself falling for, unfortunately, because it's been beaten into my brain for decades.

the difference between a good essay and a great one is whether you come out the other side knowing more than when you went in.

this is a great essay.

why samurai are cooler than klingons Before this, I used to climb cliffs, drive down to Southern Kansas and fly rockets, go skiing every once in a while. I’ve been whitewater…

This piece by @docseuss.bsky.social is long and it took me a couple of days to get around to it, but it's an excellent look at how Japanese "honor culture" is represented in Western fiction (specifically video games) and what a load of racist shit it all is. (My words, not his.) (Link below.)

Strangelove was a broad comedy, but a character like Trump would have been seen as too outlandish. The movie hinges on actions by a conspiracy theorist (General Ripper), war enthusiast (General Turgidson) and sociopath (Dr. Strangelove) whereas in our reality, Trump combines elements of all three.
