Credit where it is due...this post manages both to diss Liverpool's achievements and have some interesting mathematics in it.

Oblivion - Astor Piazzolla (arr. Dyens) Edith Pageaud
Oblivion - Astor Piazzolla (arr. Dyens) Edith Pageaud YouTube video by Edith Pageaud

I went to see the amazingly talented Edith Pageaud play in Leeds last night. I was blown away both by her technique (which is awesome) and her musicality. Absolutely beautiful music. If you get a chance to see her - take it.

Thanks Santi. Looking forward to it. I'm not sure about Hibs to be honest. Think I will stick with Man City ;)

For a history of the Tait Chair see

tait.ac.uk/History.html

The video at that page has some amazing anecdotes (including James Clerk Maxwell failing to get a job and Schrödinger failing to get a work permit.)

Championing Mathematical Physics in Edinburgh Professor Steve Tobias appointed Tait Chair of Mathematical Physics.

It is a great honour to take up the Tait Chair of Mathematical Physics at @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social. I will arrive in June 2025.

Direct statistical simulation using generalised cumulant expansions | Journal of Fluid Mechanics | Cambridge Core Direct statistical simulation using generalised cumulant expansions - Volume 1001

It's taken a while! We finally managed to show how to do Generalised Direct Statistical Simulation. Paper in Journal of Fluid Mechanics

I remember the newspaper with the headline "City title talk" and my dad turning to me and saying "they'll be lucky not to get relegated!". Typical City is back.

Floquet stability and Lagrangian statistics of a nonlinear time-dependent ABC dynamo Our paper investigates the modification of the Lagrangian statistics of a fluid flow by a magnetic field undergoing dynamo action, for a family of flows generated by spatially periodic oscillating-in-...

This is why dynamo theorists spend a lot of time calculating finite time Lyapunov exponents and thinking about the back-reaction of magnetic fields on Lagrangian chaos in fluids journals.aps.org/prfluids/abs...

Stretch-twist-fold is an important concept in chaos theory - and in MHD dynamos. A dynamo can only be a "fast" dynamo if there is Lagrangian chaos in the flow, so that stretching can overcome diffusion in the singular limit of small diffusion.

Great to see that @lifd.bsky.social has arrived at bluesky! Truly the platform has now made it.

Today I shall be speaking at the APS DFD Memorial Meeting for Keith Julien in Salt Lake City. Keith was a brilliant mathematician and great friend who was taken from us way too soon. We miss him.

A cover of Herr Dumpidump by Roger Hargreaves that says "Herr Dumpidump by Roger Hargreaves" and with an illustration of Herr Dumpidump looking especially dumpidumpish (forgive me but I can't stop repeating the word dumpidump... DUMPIDUMP!)

‘It took on a life of its own’ – how a bet started the inflatable craze in the 80s English football grounds in the late 1980s could be grey and downbeat but that changed thanks to Manchester City fan Frank Newton

I think I still have my inflatable banana somewhere
