Love how "uncertainty" got scrubbed in the process. 😉😊

Really wish there was a good word to capture this type of relationship (of which I have many). "Colleague" or "collaborator" are obviously too formal, but "friend" seems too familiar given the normal distance and frequency of contact.
It's been a long coming... Maura Slocum has her first publication from her dissertation research on Dark Earths from Ghana and Liberia. She found that not all organic C accumulated in dark earths is pyrogenic (char) - only ~65%. doi.org/10.1016/j.sc...
There was always a non-trivial proportion of letters pre-dating AI that I didn't read. I'm almost nostalgic for the "Dear esteemed professor, I have experience in a completely unrelated field to yours but would like to do my PhD in your lab."
I used Mn IRIS probes. Installed two pairs uphill of and in rain gardens on campus. Got reduction only on one of them, but been a dry fall and gardens are designed to drain. Experiment resonated with students and I like the principle - need to find better locations for install.
I'll join the lab group whiteboard show-and-tell... Primer on evolution of paradigms in soil carbon stabilization mechanisms (readings incl. Derrien et al. 2023)
Intrigued... Dr. Jennings, I would really appreciate more details for my intro envsci class. May I reach out to you about it?
Work on soil bioenergetics? Come present at CANVAS 2025 (Nov 9-12, SLC, UT) www.sciencesocieties.org/canvas Session entitled “Linking C and Energy Fluxes in Soil”, co-org by me, Liliane Ruess (Humboldt Univ of Berlin) and @arjunchakrawal.bsky.social (PNNL). Look forward to your submissions!
Just published. This project began with a visit by Haiqing and Mingsheng to my lab to perform some thermal analyses and collab on a great long-term field experiment project. First paper was a long time coming, second paper in the pipeline...

Start your year with a manuscript submission. SBB is accepting submissions to a virtual special issue on linking carbon and energy fluxes in soil – from resources to consumers and back again. Studies that directly measure or leverage energy fluxes in soils are welcome. Click link for more info.
Cool postdoc fellowship opportunity in sustainability and conservation science research in collaboration between Penn (me) and The Nature Conservancy (Stephen Wood). Details available at bit.ly/3RF565Z or DM/email me.
