ANIMATION FRIENDS: Zennon Ulyate-Crow @zennonuc.bsky.social is a pro-labor, pro-transit, pro-affordable housing candidate running for CA Senate who is ALSO fighting to keep animation strong. He will be at an animation roundtable this Tues in Santa Monica. Come if you can! He has my operatic support.

@raeforla.bsky.social, the progressive challenger to NIMBY Mayor Bass, just commented 🔥 on CA YIMBY’s post celebrating SB 79 and other state wins!

Could be promising for strengthening the pro-housing + left sysnthesis! Would love to know her official position on the bills

Yes but with the state taking away local control I’m less worried about the power of more local electeds to stop development. The amount of money it takes to become a city council candidate is a far bigger driver of the status quo than anything.

Next steps are the Commission decides on recommending 23, 25, or 31 seats. Then, alongside the rest of the charter reforms, it goes to council for approval to be put on the ballot as soon as 2026.

Changes would go into effect in 2032.

LA City Charter Reform Commission just voted to recommend expanding the Los Angeles City Council from 15 to 23-31 seats!!

This will be HUGE for reducing the influence of money in our local politics.

I’m a housing and tenants rights lawyer running to represent LA City Council District 11 (the Westside), challenging the conservative incumbent who authored that reso against SB 79. Had I been on Council, I would’ve voted No too against that bad faith reso. Post here: bsky.app/profile/faiz...

*CORRECTION*

58% of Assembly Democrats and 40% of Assembly Republicans voted Yes on the measure.

We need to strengthen pro-housing organizing in SoCal and beyond.

Join us as we build a movement for changemakers, not cheerleaders.

Showing YIMBYs true bipartisan nature, 35% of Assembly Republicans voted for SB 79.

And even though @cademocrats.bsky.social endorsed the legislation, only 42% of Assembly Democrats voted for the bill.

Ironic considering CA will lose 3-5 Dem congressional seats if we don't grow.

Once again, LA politicians showed they aren't serious about solving the housing shortage.

In the Bay, 22 of 30 Assemblymembers voted Yes.

In SoCal, only 17 of 44 voted Yes.

Dems like LA Mayor Karen Bass fought SB 79 while young champions like Asm Sade Elhawary looked to the future.

Last night #SB79, one of the biggest housing bills in CA history, made it out of the State Assembly with one vote to spare.

The data is fascinating.

Let's dive into the details, and see how your State Assemblymember voted. 👇

And much credit to the DSA-endorsed candidates who opposed this motion! Thank you @nithyaraman.bsky.social Eunisses Hernandez and a pleasant surprise coming from @hugoforcd13.bsky.social who had previously opposed LA’s big upzoning program applying in single family areas.

Progress is possible!

LA City Council just voted to oppose the biggest pro-housing bill of the past 5 years #SB79 in a shocking display of NIMBYism.

Some votes I expected but I can’t believe “progressive” Ysabel Jurado carried water for MAGA NIMBYs and opposed housing in wealthy areas. Shame.

Great report. Transit projects go through extensive public outreach and democratic approval. After the public is on board, unaccountable 3rd parties slow them to a crawl with bad faith demands, subjective standards, and unclear or ad-hoc process. Transit agencies need more control over permitting.

I think that candidates like Zohran being able to use social media to communicate with voters is good, but it scares me that Meta can unilaterally influence our politics so easily.

9 months ago 2 0 0 0

Slightly terrifying that one private company’s decision to stop suppressing political content is directly responsible for candidates like Zohran and Deja Foxx being successful.

Just got this email directly from the Social Security administration “applauding” the Trump’s Death Bill.

These are dangerous levels of partisan state-sponsored propaganda.

Mamdani won the NYC mayoral primary and California is passing real reforms to allow more housing.

If Mamdani can beat the NYC political machine, Kenneth Mejia @controller.lacity.gov can be LA's next mayor.

Here’s the direct link to the map! To be completely honest I’m not sure if this helps with color-blindness, but maybe if you invert you screen colors when looking at it thatll help?

Otherwise feel free to make a copy of the map and change the colors of the districts
