Proud to have "Nonbinary Gender Economics" out in JPE Micro. We document the economic experiences and preferences of nonbinary individuals—a population of 1M+ in the US that is often overlooked.
💸🚨I am hiring 2 Postdocs for my ERC-funded project SOCDEBT on #debt dynamics across countries. One position: #SocialStratification + strong quantitative skills. The other: qualitative research and #EconomicSociology. waitkus.github.io/SOCDEBT/ 🚨💸
This is the first research output of our project " Work-family Policies: Socioeconomic Outcomes and Policy Learning" as part of @sfb1342.bsky.social (www.socialpolicydynamics.de/projects/pro...).
4. These poverty-driven work–family trade-offs are associated with adverse child health and developmental outcomes.
5. Childcare provision improves gender equality and child outcomes, while cash transfers and paid leave show mixed effects.
2. In LMICs, the motherhood penalty often leads women to move into flexible but lower-quality jobs rather than leaving the labor force.
3. Economically disadvantaged mothers often increase their labor supply in precarious jobs after childbirth, driven by financial necessity.
We map distinctive work-family challenges in LMICs and examine how family policies can alleviate them.
1. Agricultural and informal sector jobs are often incompatible with caregiving: long hours and poor conditions offset gains from flexibility.
📢NEW PUBLICATION:
Do you think work-family challenges are limited to advanced economies, where many women work in the formal sector? Our review article disagrees (w @aysegulkayaoglu.bsky.social ).

New #aBitOfCCS episode 🎙️
I spoke with @keonhison.bsky.social about the structure of parliamentary discourse on women in the Weimar Republic!
Honestly, one of the coolest methodological set-ups I’ve seen in a while — such a thoughtful application of #CCS.

I hope this paper is of interest to people curious about the particularities of the Spanish case and to interest groups and gender and politics literature! On positionality as a male researcher on this topic, I made an effort to represent my interviewees’ perspectives faithfully and respectfully.
Two broader contributions:
1) Citizen groups can also use insider tactics of influence, similar to what professional lobbies do.
2) Having women in parliament does not only matter because they act differently, but also because they constitute entry points for female activists.
New publication in the Journal of Public Policy!🚨
⚖️It shows how feminist advocacy pushed for a reform entitling mothers and fathers to equal parental leave in Spain.
👉This also unveils that descriptive representation matters because it can open access for feminist groups.

An underrated reason for the persistence of cousin marriages: high fertility maintains a large supply of cousins. Could (help) explain why Pakistan’s first-cousin marriage rate is 50%!!! versus India and Bangladesh <10%.
