Tale as old as time

33 minutes ago 3 0 1 0

Back in the old days of DeviantART, I'd dedicate a day to comment on new artists I found. Finding new faves, giving thoughtful insight on works I enjoyed, encouraging others.

The current artist website landscape doesn't feel as welcoming for that, and I'm really missing it.

It’s inaccurate to say Mario is brave and Luigi is cowardly

Luigi is afraid of death, so he runs away from danger. Mario is afraid of living, so he runs towards death. Both brothers are cowards in their own way

Re: nostalgia for VHS tapes and other analog media, I saw someone say like "a VHS tape never sold my information to a nazi" and yes that's true! But the reason it's true is actually because Congress passed a law in 1988 specifically making it illegal for video stores to sell your rental history

Boycott Target because their AI might randomly and falsely accuse you of theft and then have you arrested and upend your life.

Listen, you've never sobbed in your life the way you sob when you internalize that humanity is the means by which the universe understands itself.

a man with blue paint on his face and horns is standing in a room . Alt: guy with blue skin and tail is teleporting into dust from white house room. nightcrawler in x-2 movie.

alan cumming does not get enough recognition for his nightcrawler role in x-2 people don't realize this but they didn't even have to use special effects he learned how to teleport for this role it's super exhausting so he doesn't do it anymore now that he's older but it was worth it for these shots

When did the "[noun] of [noun] and [noun]" book title format first start getting popular, I wonder?

Prof vs. the Tornado by Wertle The story of how young Prof learned to combat their fear of tornadoes.

A small win for me, I did this Twine story YEARS ago and even though I love it, it had my deadname in it so I stopped sharing it. However, today I buckled down and went in and updated it to my current name! Now I can share it again!

When we talk about what the NYT is up to now, it’s actually helpful to be attentive to the fact that they have *always* done shit like this

I used AI. It worked. I hated it. I used Claude Code to build a tool I needed. It worked great, but I was miserable. I need to reckon with what it means.

I appreciated this article by Michael Taggart, on the temptation to use some of these coding tools and the pitfalls, from the POV of an experienced software engineer.

This is why it's important to fight these issues collectively rather than at the individual level.

NOOOOOOO

I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines.

Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."
