Check out this blog post from our game designer, Dylan, talking about the process of designing and testing what would ultimately become βShroom Splicersβ.
Best of all, the game is FREE to download for the month of April! πβπ«π

I very much agree, I just agree so much I use it maybe a little too often in some of my designs
Is this a pigeon meme template
For me it's "choose from a pool of 3".

Ark Nova set up on a dark wood table
Playing more board games this, tonight my first play of Ark Nova. A close nail biter where I came second by a few points, beginners luck I'm sure!
52 is a great number! (Again!)
monopoly? battleship??? checkers?????
you youngins and ur newfangled games, i cant keep up.. cant we play something classic everyone already knows for once?
Yeah same, that's why I play things like Spearhead, Gaslands, Smash Up, Mindbug, and Air, Land & Sea. Let's me have a similar experience while being more self contained
The game is out right now, the designer notes for the game (where I talk TCGs) comes out soon

I don't currently collect any CCG or TCGs, I struggle with the 'chase', though I love them theoretically and aesthetically.
Believe it or not our latest game takes TCG/CCG mechanisms and applies them to playing cards, and my designer notes (releasing soon) discusses my feelings towards CCGs.
Is it good?
No, but I have played/read the sorcery choose your own adventure books
Playing some age of sigma doubles tonight. The dice have not been kind.

52 is a great number!
Shroom Splicers zine cover
Shroom Splicers is the latest game in the 52 Pickup series and is currently free.
A 2 player game, which uses a standard deck of cards, that pits two rival fungal intelligences against each other.
Capture the feeling a TCG with just a deck of cards!

4) Guinea Pig Baseball has a printable play area that doubles as a full rules summary; batting turn, pitch & swing, catch checks, all on one sheet. stuff you'd normally put on the cards goes on the sheet instead
3) Primary Systems GO has three mech system types; Primary (King), Secondary (Queen), Utility (Jack). three manufacturers. three match types.
2) Coin Workers: bigger sets = more income. three of a kind gives +2 coins, four of a kind gives +4. longer straights give more activations.
Here are some of the examples in our games for the techniques I mentioned:
1) Karate King 3100: only cares about suit for movement. spades = rook movement, clubs = knight, hearts = bishop, diamonds = king. A 2 of spades and a 10 of spades are the same card.
1) Minimise the amount of information a player needs to know at one time
2) Make the information intuitive (bigger number means bigger effect ect...)
3) Rules of 3, sets of three related pieces of information makes it easy to remember
4) optional player aides (play areas/cheat sheets)
A big problem you must overcome when designing games with regular playing cards is information.
In a custom playing card game you can put the information on the cards, with regular playing cards you don't have that luxury.
We mitigate this issue in several ways:

Did someone say FREE original tabletop games? βEcho Cityβ is a solo game where you fight your way up a skyscraper in a dark sci fi future.
The base rules are FREE to download for just one more week! Link below π
Being out of work is such poo. At least I've been able to try and turn #ttrpg work into product design portfolio pieces. Slowly refining the Prophecy Prism and Solo Surveyor, two new TTRPG tools I've made for my portfolio. Your support means a lot!

A top-down view of a virtual tabletop (VTT) battle map depicting a circular gladiatorial arena with tiered stone seating surrounding a sandy floor. A yellow circle outlines the arena boundary. Several character tokens are positioned across the sand: "Ungoli Flugar" on the left with a health bar showing 126/140, "Ungoli Grautir" at the bottom with a magenta-bordered token showing 59/160 HP, a token labeled "Talent, Cheater Guy" near the top with 29/36 HP, and "Shadow (Greg)" on the right at 38/43 HP. Additional smaller tokens with health bars are scattered in the center and lower portion of the arena. Blue diagonal lines cross the map, likely indicating line-of-sight or movement paths. The map uses a gray-and-brown palette evoking a Roman-style colosseum viewed from above.
Playtests of the Ungoli monster band for #drawsteel kicked off last week, and so far they've been loads of fun. Lots of interesting things are happening with the maps and encounters being designed for the band.
The Arena encounter is getting some more testing this weekend with a new objective!
Periodic reminder that I have a cool deck of cards for sale
What if we put some of zine games in booster packsβ¦
