I say this at the halfway point of Chrono Trigger. It’s good. It’s just not sliced bread levels of great.

Having taken the time recently to go through many old games that I missed out on or bounced off too early to have an opinion on has allowed me to put into perspective what many consider to be generational, amazing games as “yeah, this is alright.”

Once I’m done playing ffx and x-2 I gotta do ffxiv msq again just so I can enjoy all the references now that I’ve played the whole series

This. Developing above-average translation skills takes years of experience translating all sorts of texts.

And when there's no longer a way to learn these skills, who is going to judge whether an AI translation is fit for purpose? Just because it sounds good doesn't mean it's correct.

The metaphorical egg is dead and there's only so many chickens left. This is not good.

LRT: this is, again, the problem everyone will face (including me as a 32 translator newbie) going forward. How do you cut your teeth if all the low-level work is gone? How do learn from your seniors if no company is gonna hire someone w/o years of experience?

Whatever skills I have as a translator came from the million+ words I translated down the translation mines. If all the unglamorous grunt work disappears there won't be anywhere to learn
