We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.

Forgive the Critics, They're Junkies The Drug Tolerance Theory of Criticism

I wrote a piece about criticism and the ways+whys some professional reviewers' takes diverge from the common man. Please take a look.

Guilt is adaptive.

When you feel bad about violating certain moral precepts, it's human. You're being reflective, and there's a path towards better behavior.

When you keep giving yourself permission to be bad and writing it off, a part of you withers. It's corrosive.

20, books, 20 days. "Never complain, never explain," to quote the British royal family motto.

I have an idea for a fun exercise. I know not everyone agrees with the Categorical Imperative not to lie, but I wonder how long you could go without lying in your own life. Maybe count the hours + days and report back? We could have a leaderboard and everything.

That's terrible. I think I saw something about that earlier, but didn't click.

Never heard of this one. What's the quick and dirty summary?

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Oh, I clearly was on the verge, but no. As a rule, I like to make things that don't exist at all. If it already exists, even in a form I could iterate on, I'd often rather do something else. Plus I'm sure it's a lot of work I think the guy who made the feed is better suited. πŸ˜…

This last one feels like an odd read. Maybe it's partly because I'm a nominal Neo-Kantian myself (moreso in the philosophical sense), but I don't think it's wrong to acknowledge that clear dichotomies exist. Even within grayscale, there's pebble (dark) and pewter (light).

Oh my goodness. This reminds me of my dad. He could go to the supermarket and come out knowing the cashier's life story.

Hmm? Elaborate.

Sure. Same, I guess. Still nice to see librarians and book clerks helping pick up the slack, in a sense.

My loose rule is only two unread books in the home at any given time. But sadly that only applies to physical, and I'm still behind on some digital subscriptions.

I find it endearing tbh.

#2 definitely sounds more inviting, but it's too wordy.

Something closer to "a quick and easy tour of new ideas" might be better.

I'll start:
Asking someone how they're doing and being genuinely interested in the answer (regardless of whether it's positive or negative).

What would be an example of Kantianism in everyday life? How might we treat people as worthwhile in and of themselves, rather than as means to an end?

(Not rhetorical.)

A certain obsessive self-involvement? Unearned self-importance?

It's something I struggle with as both a reader and a writer. Most fiction sucks, but most autofic sucks for more predictable and avoidable reasons.

Also in per se philosophy, most questions of value are universal, not personal. Eh. πŸ€·πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ

I've actually never read it. How do you feel it holds up? Better or worse than the movie?

I'm sure many are familiar with the Dark Triad, but are y'all aware of the Light Triad? It notably includes Kantianism as one of its three pillars.

So often psych concepts seem only focused on pathologizing negative behavior. Nice to see a counterweight.

Thoughts?

Why is the co-working space I use always busy on Tuesdays? Even the common areas are swamped. Yikes.
