I guess there's levels to it. We will always reflect our surroundings, but deliberate inclusion of currents events and techs are going to hurt the long term relevance of one's stories- In my opinion, that is. ;)
Probably Beuhlmans The Lesser Dead, honestly- and even thst is a period novel set in the 70s.
When a writer ties much of their work on current/topical, they risk their work becoming dated rapidly. My entire original post is based on the Dungeon Crawler Carl books. Enjoying them, but- theres a clear "best by" date baked into the series, due to too many 'topical' references.
So you are positioned to see where I'm coming from. Watching it with your grand-daughter would be an excellent study in my point. Seeing how many jokes she gets vs how many just confuse her. Then apply those observations to current fiction like LitRPG
And I dont mean this to be disparaging as such- its observation, not salty distaste. :)
Now watch it and look for how many jokes require an understanding of topical references tied to the 70s. Its the same with Kentucky Fried Movie, and more recently- the Scary Movie franchise, and similar. Not aging well, for that reason.
'Topical' goes bad faster than bananas. Thats why *most* of the jokes in Airplane! don't land anymore (geddit? eeeyyy) With this in mind, its something authors writing fiction should really avoid. Topical is the enemy of timeless.
