Seattle also suffers from not having as much time to assert culture as many parts of the Bay. The longer and more rooted local cultures are, the more they are resilient to tech class tourism and predation. They may suffer, but persist. Those ecosystems are younger and more vulnerable in Seattle.

I used to think the Bay was the prime example of a city gutted by post-tech vulture capitalism but becoming increasingly clear it’s Seattle.

Ada's was an institution. My favorite neighborhood bookstore during lockdown. Quasi regular geek meeting site. You will be missed :(

Micro Film Review: The Godfather (1972)

I can't stop seeing the Zootopia parody when I watch this now but the movie is still quite good. The final 30 minutes are absolutely peak cinema.

Little bit obsessed with the history of pre warp spaceflight in Trek. Whole century where humanity colonizes the solar system and visits nearby stars on impulse engines only.

And I think part of the reason SNW works is because they very much understand this and lean into the goofiness.

I didn't really appreciate TOS for what it is until college. TNG/DS9/VOY have great chemistry and are incredibly thoughtful/life affirming. TOS operates with the same 1960s camp as Adam West's Batman or Sean Connery's 007. Once you plug into that it's delightful.

Micro Film Review: Star Trek IV The Voyage Home (1986)

This movie wraps up the epic Khan/Genesis arc in the silliest way possible and I kind of love it for that. We're goin to the 80's to save the whales but these characters are so wonderful it's eminently rewatchable.

Yes! Episodes like Family or Darmok just explore the characters. Let them live and breathe. See the parts of the human experience that are more than just fighting or fucking.
