Many hands make a difference when it comes to looking after a river and walkway.
Thanks for our volunteer Fiona for crunching the volunteer hours to produce these.

Quality afternoon spent with the dippers on the @wolct.bsky.social in #Edinburgh and chuffed to confirm their new nest site looks in good shape 👍
A big clean up at Juniper Green this morning.
Removing lots more rubbish from the local area and river as part of our spring clean.
A morning wade in the Dells, teaching more volunteers how to move with great poise and purpose in the river.
Several bags of rubbish removed to keep the local area beautiful.

Sad / happy finding this egg on Water of Leith today (see final image) but struggling with an ID. Thought it might be a Great Tit's but at 40mm long, it's more like a Woodpigeon's. Any ideas?
Received an update from @scottishwater.bsky.social to say their project programme remains on track to be complete by the end of July. Working to install the new storm overflow chamber under the carriageway at Gorgie Rd to reduce sewage waste in the river during heavy downpours.
A nice drone shot
A productive morning on the Murrayburn tributary at Riccarton for our volunteers.
Whilst one team dug up 100s of Giant Hogweed seedlings to stop this seed source. Another removed 2 ton bags worth of rubbish from this hard to reach section.
Thanks to Scottish Water for access.
Gather with friends and family at dusk and enjoy each other's company while looking for bats in the night sky. Take part in the sunset survey, find out more here www.bats.org.uk/our-work/nat...
A morning wade for our ranger team digging up 181 Giant Hogweed seedlings between the Rocheid path and Stockbridge. We also found the Himalayan balsam seedling of the year.
Stopping these INNS from getting a hold on the river bank leaves space for native species
Spring
Beautiful spring morning for wading & litter picking on the Water of Leith just downstream of Balerno. Great to see so many @wolct.bsky.social volunteers out today.
Another great riverfly survey this morning in Balerno with our highest score yet! This indicates good water quality and no current (major) pollution events.
A morning volunteer task up at Balerno keeping the river and local area clean of litter.
In addition to litter picking, we removed lots of invasive few flowered leek from Graham's garden and carried out our regular riverfly survey of water quality.
The model railway show at Heriot-Watt University this weekend has an excellent model of Kinleith Paper Mill - it's worth a look if you have memories of the place.
Managed to capture some shots of this happy wee Long Tailed Tit having fun in the trees along the Water of Leith walkway. I love these little maniacs 😎

A morning wade from Damside weir to Bells weir on the hunt for Giant Hogweed seedlings and rubbish.
Over 50 seedlings destroyed and several bags of rubbish removed to keep the river healthy.
Great fun was had by all at our Learn-to-Wade session this morning, a basic induction for those who have never waded before, or who want to build up confidence. All attendees are now ready to come out to our regular wading sessions and get stuck in! Well done everyone!
Successful Riverfly survey this morning at Longstone. Lots of river invertebrate found, including a stunning Cassed Caddisfly
We ran dual sessions at Kinleith and Juniper Green today, with the first meadow survey of the year at JG, and a spring cleaning wade at Kinleith. Both sessions benefitted from the warmer spring conditions and were most productive and enjoyable! Thanks to everyone who came along👍
Weather was nice today so took camera to work for my lunchtime walk and spotted the Black Capped Warbler (I think). Seen on banks of Water of Leith. A new capture for me, much happy! 😎

A morning in chemical suits digging up Giant Hogweed seedlings at Hermiston for our volunteers.
Over 500 plants dispatched to reduce our need to chemically spray them later in the year.
A fair pile of rubbish found as well.
No wading today with @wolct.bsky.social as the river level was too high so had a wee extreme litter picking session with Jim. Ten bags, two pipes and a car wheel removed from the slope opposite Currie Kirk.
No chance of wading today so walkway work instead for our volunteers.
Paths swept, old fencing removed, drainage dug out and of course litter picking.
Now time for easter 🍫

Stupid little walk for my stupid little mental health – another Edinburgh Edition.
Ian Graham, of Colinton Clocks returns to the Visitor Centre this Saturday with his Mesmerising Mechanisms Exhibition.
10am-4pm, free entry
The exhibition features wooden machines he designed and built himself
The exhibition is hands on fun for all ages
The Learning team at WOLCT have taken on the BSBI 2026 100 plant challenge. First plant along the walkway is wood anemone. Did you know these delicate little plants only spread six feet over 100 years? @bsbiscotland.bsky.social
Our volunteers had a lovely morning learning how to sample river invertebrates. A huge thank you to Buglife for running the training session.
Lots going on down at Coalie Park today with our monthly clean-up in full swing. As well as our usual land and water litter pick, we welcomed a new crew member onto the boat, removed a large buddliea tree, swept paths, and scrubbed graffiti from the planter benches. Thanks folks!
