It's so difficult when your job and your sense of purpose are intractably linked. Losing one often leads to a loss of the other. And, yes, having to tell your partner just adds to your sense of shame and worthlessness. Sometimes it's difficult to see beyond that. But your wise words offer comfort.

Coming on here does feel like shouting into the void, but shout I shall, so here goes: I'm a UK-based author of crime novels. Six to date, with a seventh on its way. Currently working on book number eight. Feel free to get in touch for a chat about anything book related...

I'm delighted to say that I have chosen and will be introducing three episodes of a forgotten 1970s TV masterpiece at this year's Hastings TV Festival at the Electric Palace cinema in the old town on Thursday 9th October, one in the morning and two in the evening.

I have a sneaking suspicion The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation might give it a good run for its money in that department...

I'm not on here much (maybe it's just a growing disillusionment with social media in general...🤨). Unfortunately I can no longer access the 'chat' facility unless I agree to dontate what's left of my soul to Satan...😐, which isn't going to happen. But if you 'tweet me/poke me', I will reply.

I’m no expert but I would’ve got a person to do it.

Meta protest: take action

On Thursday 3 April, 1:30pm, a group of SoA members and staff will be meeting at Granary Square, close to Meta UK London headquarters, to deliver our letter and make our voices heard. To mark the occasion, we encourage members to share the SoA’s social media activity on the day. More details to follow next week.
Meta Takeover: On 3 April, we want to flood Meta with our objections. Please post on Facebook, Instagram and Threads and encourage others to do the same to show your support. You will be able to download social media graphics, which can also be used as temporary profile pictures, from our website next week.
Sign the open letter to Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, which you can find here. Involving the UK government is vital. The endangerment of protection for authors’ works is based on what is or is not permitted under UK law (see What else the SoA is doing, below).
Write to Meta. To find out if your books are in the LibGen dataset, you can search here. This will not tell you whether they have been used by Meta, but it is alleged that Meta downloaded the whole dataset to train its model. For a belt and braces approach, send a letter to Meta and other AI companies stating they do not have the right to use your books. You can use the Authors Guild of America’s model template. Also alert your publisher and agent if you have one.
Write to your local MP. We must keep pressure on government at this crucial time to safeguard creative rights. The Creative Rights in AI Coalition (CRAIC) has an email form here. (If you hear back from your MP, let us know).

Thank you so much, @societyofauthors.bsky.social for this positive action on the Meta AI shocker. Let’s do this. 👍👍👍

In the days before clouds, emails etc, Jilly Cooper once left an entire manuscript on a bus. It was never recovered. Though I constantly curse technology, it does sometimes serve us well. Glad you got your folder back😀.

Tucker Carlson is a fool. And like all fools, he's easily played, especially by someone like Putin.

Sorry to hear about your mum. I went through that with mine, and it does take time to come to terms with everything (I found grief counselling helped).

I'm rapidly/slowly approaching the submissions stage with this new thriller...😐 It *is* a soul-destroying process.

Southern Water (yes, they're still a thing...) recently announced they were going to pay out millions in compensation to Hastings residents affected by water shortages last year. They also announced a hike in water bills.

They giveth with one hand and taketh with the other...🙄

I don't watch the show, but I really enjoyed the 40th anniversary documentary. Lovely to see Anita Dobson back in the Vic recalling some of those brilliant scenes from the early days.
