Pulping Unfair Incentives: Separating EU Policies from Paper Industry Interests - Environmental Paper Network

🇪🇺 The #EU must phase out these harmful subsidies and redirect funding to smaller, environmentally sustainable businesses and to creating the opportunities to deliver local, thriving rural economies.

It also finds that giant conglomerates that dominate the industry are absorbing precious public funds that could be used to support a #JustTransition in forestry.

🪵 EPN and @fern.org published a report that documents subsidies flowing to the pulp and paper sector, and its social and ecological impacts in Finland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. It finds that the industry has an outsized & destructive effect on #forests in #Europe and abroad.

Indonesia’s deforestation surges 66% in 2025, reversing years of decline JAKARTA — Indonesia’s deforestation surged in 2025, rising 66% from the previous year, marking a sharp reversal after several years of decline, according to new data from the NGO Auriga Nusantara.…

A new data from NGO Auriga Nusantara reveals a 66% spike in forest loss across Indonesia. Satellite data shows that government-backed projects and poor spatial planning now threaten to derail the nation’s 2030 climate goals.

In letter to @ipcc.bsky.social, leading scientists, including #EASAC experts, urge the #IPCC to fix loopholes in its carbon-accounting rules.

They warn: splitting land-use and #energy accounting lets countries claim #CO2 cuts not reflected in real emissions.

The science on biomass burning is clear: "biomass from forests cannot be regarded as carbon neutral".

The scientific community is expressing concern that carbon emissions released from burning biomass are being ignored because of an accounting loophole. #ForestsAreNotFuel

“Until that ‘carbon payback period’ is passed (studies show this to be a long-term process taking 75 to +100 years), there may be no net reduction in emissions compared to burning fossil fuels. [It contrasts] with the short timeframes in which we must act to avoid crossing planetary tipping points.”

The open letter reads: "The inherently high emissions from biomass combustion lead to an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels that persist until the harvested carbon is reabsorbed.”

Put a forest in your tank: Why e-fuels aren’t necessarily a climate solution - Environmental Paper Network E-fuels are being promoted as a climate solution for aviation, shipping, and road transport. There are a variety of e-fuels, but beware! Some of them use

🌏 Far from always representing a clean, responsible alternative, some e-fuel solutions risk becoming a major new driver of forest destruction and carbon emissions, wreaking havoc during their production and/or combustion.

📄 A new brief from the Biomass Action Network exposes the flaws in the tempting narrative that simple ‘drop-in’ e-fuel solutions can quickly replace oil-based transport fuels for shipping, aviation, and road transport.

⛽ e-Fuels are being promoted as a climate solution for aviation, shipping, and road transport. There are a variety of e-fuels, but beware! Some of them use woody biomass and are another manifestation of the failed industrial biomass energy model – dressed up as innovation. ❌

#ZeroWasteDay #WasteEnergy #CO2

❓Why? Due to an accounting omission, they can circumvent regulations & even receive subsidies intended for renewable energy alternatives. Many industry actors apply a default assumption that 50% of emissions from burning mixed waste are biogenic – so they only report half of the actual CO₂ emitted.

3 weeks ago 2 0 1 0

🏭 So, what are key industry players doing?

They are turning to “waste-to-energy” solutions, touting them as a green solution, as they are not obliged to report all CO₂ emissions.

🌳🪓Every year we cut down 3 billion trees just to produce paper packaging, and where this packaging is increasingly difficult to recycle as it’s often layered with plastic or used for food, we are witnessing a rise in paper packaging rapidly turning into non-recyclable waste.

🙅‍♂️ Don't fall into the biogenic trap - burning paper and packaging waste still releases carbon emissions. This Int’l #ZeroWasteDay, we need to talk about the myth that incineration of waste for energy (“waste-to-energy”) is a “green” solution when it is a CO₂ emissions-heavy pollutant energy source.

Among the environmental violations, activists raised awareness of the destruction of old-growth forests and the ecological impacts of pulp plantations' expansion in 🇺🇾 Uruguay, in which +90 organisations have called for a halt.

These issues occur in a broader context of increasingly tense land conflicts around customary land, where incidents such as the killing of indigenous activists and the recent unmotivated arrests of traditional leaders have been reported.
