❓Why? Due to an accounting omission, they can circumvent regulations & even receive subsidies intended for renewable energy alternatives. Many industry actors apply a default assumption that 50% of emissions from burning mixed waste are biogenic – so they only report half of the actual CO₂ emitted.
🏭 So, what are key industry players doing?
They are turning to “waste-to-energy” solutions, touting them as a green solution, as they are not obliged to report all CO₂ emissions.
🌳🪓Every year we cut down 3 billion trees just to produce paper packaging, and where this packaging is increasingly difficult to recycle as it’s often layered with plastic or used for food, we are witnessing a rise in paper packaging rapidly turning into non-recyclable waste.
🙅♂️ Don't fall into the biogenic trap - burning paper and packaging waste still releases carbon emissions. This Int’l #ZeroWasteDay, we need to talk about the myth that incineration of waste for energy (“waste-to-energy”) is a “green” solution when it is a CO₂ emissions-heavy pollutant energy source.
Among the environmental violations, activists raised awareness of the destruction of old-growth forests and the ecological impacts of pulp plantations' expansion in 🇺🇾 Uruguay, in which +90 organisations have called for a halt.
These issues occur in a broader context of increasingly tense land conflicts around customary land, where incidents such as the killing of indigenous activists and the recent unmotivated arrests of traditional leaders have been reported.
Forced evictions have been documented in 🇧🇷 Brazil, pulp plantations expanded with alleged land grabs and the displacement of local communities.
