but i can’t help thinking that they neutered an interaction i used primarily for friendship to make a better weapon for acrid political debate

i know why they changed it to stop notifying A. they had this interaction in mind:

A: [contentious culture war opinion]
B: [pointed disagreement]
C likes B’s tweet, but doesn’t want A to know

there was something so cozy and friendly about this interaction:

A: [party question]
B: [great answer]
C likes B's tweet — and A gets to see that B and C are bonding in the replies

it’s not that i cared about being able to snoop all the people who liked a given tweet

i just wanted to know who liked the _replies_ to my tweets. and vice versa — i wanted twitter to notify OP when i liked a reply to one of their tweets

of all the bad decisions made at twitter, the worst had to be penalizing links. so petty, and so destructive of conversation on the open web

but the decision that caused me the greatest sadness was hiding likes
