I was born in 1983. Every day I woke up, switched from my Mario pajamas to my Mario sweatsuit, and every adult in the world told or sang at me to stay off drugs using entirely vibes based child psychology that had never been tested in the field. Then I would watch TGIF, fall asleep, and do it again.

Elite higher ed has many problems, but the key factor driving down trust is political. Look at the graph - backlash against costs, admissions, etc. can't explain the changes we see. We should still reform our institutions and refocus on our core mission, but blindly blaming ourselves is abuser logic

Also, I'd be deeply embarrassed to be engaging in enabling abuser logic while the far right authoritarian party engages in wildly illegal, unconstitutional, & unprecedented attacks on & defunding of American higher education.

Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?

Wave of the future.

"Even if readers didn’t make it all the way to the ends of the papers, they would have encountered red flags early on, such as statements that 'this entire paper is made up' and 'Fifty made-up individuals...were recruited for the exposure group.'"

Can a plastic mail-order sex doll be a wiling adult participant in a relationship? Normal people say no but we spent 1600 words talking to Wayne, who lives in his mother’s shed outside of Indianapolis, to take the proposition very seriously, because we have grave perceptual and analytic deficits.

Indigenous Constitutionalism - Harvard Law Review By standard accounts, there are fifty-four constitutions across the federal, state, and territorial governments of the United States. But in fact, there are 230 other governmental constitutions that currently govern peoples and territories within the United States. These constitutions not only flow from a sovereignty that existed prior to the United States but also came out of a legal movement that asserted its independence from both the U.S. Constitution and state constitutions. This Article tells the story of these constitutions — the constitutions of Native nations.

Honestly still in shock by its placement, but my article (and job talk paper), “Indigenous Constitutionalism,” is officially out in the Harvard Law Review. A brief thread on this project🧵

Vance tries to boost ailing MAGA ally ahead of Hungary election The vice president was the star attraction at a rally for Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian prime minister who is trailing in the polls days before Sunday’s vote.

It's gotten lost amidst everything else, but a sitting Vice President traveling overseas to speak at a campaign rally for a flailing authoritarian leader is such a massive violation of both norms and democratic values

UW graduate student deported through SEA as protesters demand answers A union representing University of Washington graduate student workers says Kennedy Orwa’s student visa was rescinded without explanation.

Our PhD student Kennedy Orwa, who studies applications of AI to health care, was hastily deported today to Kenya along with his 13-year-old son without opportunity to speak to legal counsel.

I am not one of those who believes that history repeats, but consider the following from Herodotus: the Oracle at Delphi told the fabulously wealthy King Croesus that if he invaded Persia he would "destroy a great empire." Croesus invaded and lost--the empire he destroyed was his own.

The President of the U.S. The man with the nuclear codes. And people are just going to pretend this is ok.

In a functioning society, he would be removed from office within hours by his own party.

NYT: President Trump on Sunday escalated his threats to bomb Iranian power plants within the next two days and taunted the country’s leaders in an expletive-laden social media post.

Mr. Trump, seemingly emboldened by the successful U.S. rescue of an American airman in Iran over the weekend, issued a new ultimatum to Iran to end its chokehold over the Strait of Hormuz, a major Persian Gulf waterway for the transport of oil and gas, by Apr. 6.

If Iran’s government did not, he said, U.S. forces would target the country’s energy infrastructure, which supplies power for millions of civilians.

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!” Mr. Trump wrote on social media. The president has previously postponed his deadline to attack twice and the Omani foreign ministry said on Sunday that officials had discussed how to reopen the Strait of Hormuz with Iranian counterparts without reaching a definitive agreement.

“Praise be to Allah,” Mr. Trump added, before signing off in all caps.

A traveler from an antique land--great guy--said to me with tears in his eyes "Sir, two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert." And I said wow, that's really something. But we'll be building a big beautiful statue to my hubris and it will stand for eternity

As someone who studies politicization of democratic militaries this statement on X is a five- alarm fire. It creates an undeniable permission structure for overt partisan behavior by mil. It's part of a concerted effort by civilian leaders to turn the U.S. military into a partisan aligned force.

”Working class” means whatever you want. There‘s no research and no need for consistency. Use it however: People without college degrees, jobs that *require* college degrees, veterans of any rank, prominent wealthy surgeons, any candidate you like, any voter you dislike.
