Yeah, his response to the prospect of online lessons took us by suprise, he'd never previously mentioned it (we were joking about getting Joe Wicks on in the morning :))

For me it's now more of an anchor point for remembering when something happened, rather than evoking strong feelings

Came up in a conversation with our 16-yr old - his school's had a big rebuild due to it being one of the worst RAAC-affected - return after Easter's delayed so they been stagger the kids getting used to it - three day's of Teams lessons were floated and he told us how much he hated those days

The Sound of Silence The past week has brought the shocking reality of anti-Jewish hatred home to a lot of people in this country - but there is one part of society that still doesn’t seem to have noticed.

"And the response to this from Britain’s anti-racist movement, that regularly claims to mobilise tens of thousands to march against racism? Zilch. Nothing. No campaigns, no solidarity vigils, maybe a tweet or two, but beyond that? Silence." — @daverich1.bsky.social

Yeah, the huge growth in recent years means that a sizeable chunk of society chooses to spend its leisure time literally losing!

There's a link to the huge growth in online gambling here, even winning feels like a loss - Barney Ronay captured it perfectly in his piece last weekend:

"There was brief, air-punching euphoria. Then … I felt nothing. I felt sad. Why hadn’t I put everything on this?"

That same generation also likely enjoyed access to equity release (sure Duncan Weldon referred to this as treating houses like an ATM), & compensation from both endowment and PPI misselling - big one-off cash transfers into households

Related to this: Indian sub-continent Catholic priests taking up diocesan positions in Australia - unhappy to find they're more likely to be addressed by their first name than the "Father" they've grown accustomed to

(as recounted by the Aus priest who was our local guy a few years ago)
