- Novel approaches with breakthrough potential: We continue to be on the lookout for step-change innovations that fundamentally outcompete existing technologies and offer a clear "unfair advantage" to highly scalable, low-cost carbon removal.
- Building precise, scalable measurement tools for open systems: We need innovations—from soil pore-water sensors to marine mixing models—that accelerate the transition to automated, high-fidelity monitoring.
- Determining how to add more alkalinity to the ocean efficiently and safely: We are looking for field-based empirical studies that characterize chemistry in the near-field mixing zone and identify engineering strategies to maximize alkalinity addition without triggering precipitation.
- Increasing mineralization efficiency for large volumes of rocks: We seek the best ways to increase efficiency at scale — from rock pile architectures that effectively carbonate million-ton deposits with air to innovative pretreatments increasing mineral reactivity.
We are focusing our 2026 R&D grants and prepurchases on these challenges:
Please join us for an introduction to #CDR startup accelerators! We've got a great panel lined up, with Tito Jankowski from AirMiners Launchpad, Mica Taborga Claure from Marble venture studio, and Marian Krueger of remove. Register here: luma.com/mxsdp8xm #energysky #carbonremoval

Today, Frontier announced an offtake agreement with Planetary, the team behind the world’s first OAE verified tons. Their work is part of a growing set of global projects scaling responsible testing of OAE under real-world conditions.

Evidence to date — from mesocosms, oyster hatchery interventions, and > a dozen controlled coastal pilots — shows ability to control pH within safe bounds, measurable CO₂ drawdown, and no acute harm to local biota for alkalinity addition at relevant rates.
OAE raises alkalinity by adding minerals such as Ca(OH)₂, and Mg(OH)₂. This shifts carbonate chemistry, allowing for additional CO₂ uptake while locally providing relief from acidification.
The ocean absorbs ~25% of human CO₂ emissions. That uptake is acidifying surface waters, stressing calcifiers, and weakening the ocean’s carbon sink.
Quick state of play on Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE): where the science stands, what recent trials show, and why it warrants careful, scaled testing. 🧵
Today is Day 2 of the public hearing on the EPA’s reconsideration of the 2009 endangerment finding, the key ruling underpinning U.S. greenhouse gas regulations. 🧪
Testimonies start at the top of the hour, and we’re following along: 👇🧵
The recent DOE climate science report misrepresents the work of many researchers. Carbon Brief asked those cited to review the parts of the report where their work was used, and we collectively found 100+ misleading or false statements: interactive.carbonbr...
absolute insanity - the new normal.
Karbonetiq: uses a low-cost, passive aeration system to mineralize industrial waste into Mg and Ca carbonates.
pHathom Technologies, Inc: develops a storage solution for concentrated CO2 streams (e.g., for biogenic emissions) based on limestone dissolution, storing the CO2 safely and durably in the ocean.
Limenet: develops an electric kiln for production of carbon-free lime for CDR approaches such as ocean alkalinity enhancement, mineral looping DAC or surficial mineralization.
Excited to announce another set of Frontier prepurchases! The field of carbon removal is maturing and we have selected three companies that work on compelling approaches to high scale, low cost approaches to CDR by leveraging abundant, alkaline materials:

Adding carbon removal to a waste to energy plant is a no brainer - excited about this first project with Hafslund Celsio!
This is all so f**ed. Hope grantees will be able to keep their funding and progress the science! Hold on!
Frontier has facilitated its first electrochemical DAC offtake with Phlair.
Phlair has the potential to deliver ultra low-cost DAC for a few reasons—one being that their approach is explicitly designed to work with cheap intermittent energy sources like solar.
