Hannah started the last main section of the #tattoo sleeve. That's the #whirlpoolgalaxy, #ursamajor done as a mammoth, #leo, #orion, #taurus, and the #pleiades. It is only five days in, so it's still healing and peeling. Much of the coloring and shading is also yet to be finished.

Art and Science I’d not thought to post anything here when I joined.

This a #poem I wrote between the years 2011 and 2025. It was not a continuous effort. There were entire years in that interval during which I wrote nothing at all.

A topic close to my heart. In fascinated with the fact the dog domestication predates the development of agriculture.

Climate Physicists Face the Ghosts in Their Machines: Clouds | Quanta Magazine The planet is getting hotter, but one factor in particular makes it hard to tell just how hot it will get. Physicists and computer scientists are racing to solve the problem of clouds.

A good read both for how it covers the current state of uncertainty in climate modeling, as well as it's coverage of the new methods for dealing with the limitations that neural nets have made available.

In my case I've found the LLM generated summaries are starting to get useful, and more recently I've converged on the approach of adjusting the query to help the LLM-based summarizer pick up on what I'm really looking for. Though my other rule is that the LLM must give references or it is ignored.

In that case, I am interested, in hearing what you are thinking a recalibration might entail. I came to bluesky because I was intrigued by the founder's vision, and want to see if a version of social media that doesn't devolve into misinformation echo chambers is possible.

I was guessing that you meant our traditional news channels, though it also occurred to me that you might mean bluesky itself. So I wasn't sure what to say beyond my previous reply. 😉

I probably agree. But in this instance, since there are so many channels with misinformation, I'm not sure which channel you are referring to in this post.

In a moment of defeat, the brain undergoes a sudden shift. The neuroscientist Misha Ahrens (left) and his student Alex Chen showed that cells called astrocytes help to shift the brain state from hope to hopelessness.

This also appears directly related to the challenges discussed in my previous repost since LLMs are modelled after networks of neurons, and this article is about an important network in the brain that runs parallel to the networks of neurons for which an LLM has no analog.

The raw interactions quoted here with what the article calls a misaligned LLM are disturbing. But to see this behavior being studied at this level is encouraging.

My first computer was an Atari 400. Membrane keyboard. Couldn't even boot without a cartridge plugged in. But laid the foundation for everything I know about computer architecture and programming. 😉

The “MaxCut” problem is a fundamental question about graphs with real-world applications, like efficient circuit design. Recently, work on MaxCut helped mathematicians solve a major problem in number theory.

What Your Brain Is Doing When You’re Not Doing Anything | Quanta Magazine When your mind is wandering, your brain’s “default mode” network is active. Its discovery 20 years ago inspired a raft of research into networks of brain regions and how they interact with each other.

The brain is busy even when you’re just zoning out.

Space Policy Edition: Should a (potential) biosignature revive Mars Sample Return?

I'm a few months behind, but is still worth a listen now. That sample container is prepped and ready to be picked up. It is expensive to do so, but it's also a sample that will aid our understanding of the origins of life if we could get it from there to here.
