The first paper from the Cortex Special Issue on Conceptual Knowledge is out!
🧠 In this perspective piece, David Kemmerer and Guy Dove propose that what’s truly “default” about the Default Mode Network is its role in representing language-specific, culturally diverse concepts.

This is a great initiative. I’m right that this is for anyone, anywhere? I’m running a session on something like this at my institution but will also cover best practice for editors and what makes a good review(er). As I’ll be covering quite a bit it would be great for my folks to zoom in with yours
Reminder: we have a call for papers for a new virtual special issue in Cortex on Concept Knowledge.

It’s my last programme as meetings secretary. Thanks to all who submitted work or accepted invitations, and the exec (past & present) for support and encouragement the last 3 years. Extra thanks to Ajay Halai, my successor. He’s worked hard on this programme, and I wish him luck for future meetings.
Global citizenship! So refreshing to hear that term. I’m probably being woke though.
A favourite time of year 🧠

New exciting paper from our own @charlie-wiltshire.bsky.social!
🚨 Congratulations to @dirinagiurgea.bsky.social for getting this lovely paper out! Reward processing is an essential aspect of human experience, yet its contribution to the representation of concepts has received little attention…until now!

The age at which children learn words depends on frequency of exposure, phonological complexity, and concreteness. In this new paper, we show that it also depends on the social relevance of the word, and that some abstract words may be learned earlier because they capture our social experiences.
Last summer, the BIU was very fortunate to welcome two new excellent early career researchers into its ranks (see below). Check out our website and annual report for further information regarding our diverse team of principal investigators:
