Our communities are more progressive than this government, and our rangatahi definitely are.

Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X
Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

It is interesting how poshumanism
--conceived as a challenge to power--might now serve to strengthen the power of tech companies producing AI & other robots. It may serve to reposition discussions of personhood, care & agency in ways that fit tech company fantasies.

On this day in 2019, I witnessed one of the coolest things ever. A lenticular cloud lit-up by a setting sun over the Perito Morena Glacier in Argentina.

Google Starts Scanning All Your Photos As New Update Goes Live Google wants its AI to see all the photos of "you and your loved ones." Billions of users must now decide.

“Take a moment to think before you dive in. That’s the best advice for Google Photos users, as the company confirms its latest update can scan all your photos to “use actual images of you and your loved ones” in AI image generation.”

Little known fact, but the NZ household sector is really very wealthy compared to our economy and the rest of the world. This data doesn't include land or weatherboard palaces, it's just a huge stack of financial assets - shares, equity, cash etc. How do we do it? [🧵 1/n]

women who hate men generally just hate what men have done to them whereas men who hate women mostly just hate what women won’t do for them

the difference is crucial

Excellent! Thanks @legallyfeminist.bsky.social and @sarahhbickerton.bsky.social "meaningful progress on online safety requires enforceable platform obligations, independent regulatory oversight, and a model grounded in accountability, prevention, and substantive gender equality."

Cartoon. The introduction says, “Worried about the fall out from the war on Iran, Finance Minister Nicola Willis goes to Washington to ask:” and the image shows the Oval Office with President of the USA Donald Trump. He is being Jesus, with his hands raised, eyes closed, and wearing a white gown with a red sash and a long red tie. Nicola Willis says to him, “”When can we expect a return to normal?” Trump opens one eye and replies, “Huh?”

Wit, unker, git: The lost medieval pronouns of English intimacy Tales of love and adventure from 1,000 years ago reveal a dazzling range of now-extinct English pronouns. They capture something unique about how people once thought about "two-ness".

We should bring back these lost pronouns, partly because they are cool, and partly to annoy the TERFs (bonus point to the article for mentioning Chaucer’s use of the singular ‘they’).
