People re-use each other's words, syntax and semantics in conversation, arguably to facilitate common ground. In a new Proceedings of the Royal Society B we assess whether this tendency can be used an individually reliable trait (e.g. to correlate it to something else): doi.org/10.1098/rspb... 1/
Good news everyone! I have made the binaural beats app I have been wanting, one free from advertisement, with all the control I could want (because I’ll just tell the machine to make it again)

NTS radio has been my go-to to discover new sounds for a couple of months now, I've grown to like it a lot! I always have a tab open to listen to a show in there.

quitting Spotify and streaming services in general has pushed me to reconsider my digital habits. surprisingly my music taste remains eclectic. I'm slowly working my way through Soulseek and Funkwhale (and now Symphonium, which is a lovely app to play your music on!!)
testing the new bsky update... i can't believe we can share bandcamp finds now! lovely stuff.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.
Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
super exciting work! can't wait to dive into this :)) congrats Iolo!!!
"This how men behave." NO IT IS NOT. Not once in my career have I offered a description of someone's appearance, nor I have I ever been asked. WTF. This dude should not be teaching. And we ask ourselves why women fall out of fields like CS, as if it is a mystery with guys like this out there

Deepfake pornography isn’t going away just because we are passing laws and taking down a couple of big websites.
Our new pre-print, led by @aedcv.bsky.social suggests that the sharing of this material continued to prosper even after platform and policy shocks.

these paper deadlines are NOT a joke omg... how do you guys do this....... (just submitted my first paper I think I need to take a three-day-long nap)
I understand why people like LLMs because I, too, really want this paper to be done. By which I mean, I want to “stop thinking about it,” but to do so I have to arrive at a point where the thought is *complete* rather than the point at which I am “frustrated by the challenge of completing it.”
disappointing but not surprising on many aspects alas 🫠

Best case scenario would be to forbid the models to generate such bs. Not sure how we can enforce that quickly.
It's been absolutely nerve wracking to see many young women around my age and younger be targeted by this online. Deepfake/porn has been an fastly growing issue online and it's definitely frightening as it's hard for us to understand what are the tools at hand to defend ourselves against this.
"Half of the images generated at the end of the year showed people partially denuded"
Why not actually say that, once again, women are targeted online and that *men* are calling Grok to create nude/bikini deepfakes of women?? Why not call it what it is?
Happy Christmas!!! ☘️☘️☘️
