“If you give officers totally unbridled discretion to decide who does or doesn’t approach them in 25 feet, there is an unacceptable risk they will use that discretion to clamp down on newsgathering they don’t like,” @rcfp.org's Grayson Clary told @al.com.

A West Virginia law that could restrict the disclosure of information about public officials will chill reporting on matters of public concern if it takes effect, @rcfp.org argues in a new friend-of-the-court brief.
In an important victory for @nytimes.com and press freedom, a federal judge ruled last week that the Pentagon’s restrictive media access policy violated the First and Fifth Amendments.
@sejorg.bsky.social recently published a survival guide for today's environmental journalists, citing @rcfp.org's free Legal Hotline as a key resource for reporters.
“Releasing these records will enable ProPublica to report on public health issues of paramount importance,” @rcfp.org attorneys argue in a motion to unseal court records on behalf of @propublica.org.
The ruling stems from a @nytimes.com lawsuit against the Pentagon last year, which claimed the new press access policy violated journalists’ rights.
@rcfp.org filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the Times, urging the court to reject the policy.
A quote from RCFP's Gabe Rottman: 'In a careful opinion, the court affirmed that our security and liberty rely on the press's freedom to publish and the public's ability to access news about government affairs free from state control. The Pentagon's policy cannot be squared with the Constitution and, especially at this moment, threatens to deny the electorate crucial information about the military.'
"[T]he court affirmed that our security and liberty rely on the press's freedom to publish and the public's ability to access news about government affairs free from state control," @rcfp.org's Gabe Rottman said.
