The work could help to explain why the risk of developing some brain conditions — such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease — differs between males and females

Microscopy image of a section of human brain tissue at the level of the striatum with white matter fiber tracts outlined in bright green
And some love for the human 🧠 for #FluorescenceFriday. I like these zoom outs where you can see a whole structure - here, striatum. Green is MBP and outlining the white matter tracts, 🟣 is DRD1 and if you zoom in (see zooms in following posts) there is 🔴 for RXFP1 marking clusters of island cells.
Yup. Not to mention the monday morning quarterbacking and what ifs.
It shouldn't be a PlotTwist(tm) to reveal that nothing gross happened. This nice gent did not prey on me in any fashion, and I have since come to know more lovely dudes like him. (9)

I’ve always said that submitting a grant proposal is an exercise in hope—not just in terms of being funded, but as a symbol of what it means to dream big and ask exciting questions. Despite everything happening to federal science over the last year, I’m holding on to that hope.
Proposal submitted.
100%. Peer review discussions are essential and in-person relationships engender stronger discussions.
I am grateful I haven't had an experience where I required more empathy. I hope you can manage. Sending hugs.
Empathetic? Context?
The strength of our process is in the discussion. Having a committee discuss and vote improves rigor and outcomes. So we have to ask - how do we get the same level or rigor with higher efficiency? Breakout discussions? LoI instead of full proposal? We are the ones doing the work after all.
Is there a database of the schools with graduate student unions? Didn't any of you make and share a Google sheet?!?!
Please rt.
Had an amazing time at World Neuroscience Day yesterday interacting with patients & physicians. Was honored to share science on data-driven interventions for caregiver stress.
Photo of Grace Stroman at podium prior to her presentation at UNC Chapel Hill. Her presentation focused on novel roles of MeCP2, DNA methylation reader which is a potent regulator of development. MeCP2 is most known for its cause of Rett Syndrome when mutated, but Grace is presenting some of the lab’s latest findings on the role of MeCP2 in cancer biology.
My student, Grace Stroman, was selected to present at the 9th Chromatin and Epigenetics Symposium. Her presentation was exceptional! Our keynote speaker @grewalsh.bsky.social was brilliant! Thanks to the organizers, @unclineberger.bsky.social, and @brianstrahl.bsky.social for a remarkable meeting!
This is why we keep going. #scienceisfreedom
Favorite part of travel is connecting with amazing talented friends doing incredible research and training the next gen 🙌🤩🧬🔬🧫 In these tough times, it’s both inspirational and much needed 🥰
Thank you for these data - very informative.
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success. Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302
The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
😅
"Cross-Organ Neuroimmunology of Behavior". Xuanming Guo and I discuss a new framework that reconceptualizes behavior as an emergent property of a distributed, brain-body neuroimmune network. lnkd.in/eihqZ_ay. @sinaiimmuno.bsky.social @sinaibrain.bsky.social
I've been ranting about this. The whole system is probabilistic right down to the atomic clouds.
Extremely proud of Rachael @neurohoke.bsky.social and Kiara for this work. I have learned so much working with @talliezee.bsky.social and the whole team.
I share one from Philadelphia
Comme un igloo
Homewood campus, Johns Hopkins University
Yes!!!! The snow in Phila formed these bricks and all I wanted was to build an igloo. But I was too cold.
keep up the good works - I'm so grateful that you represent us in the public sphere
Headline: "Scientists discover emperor penguin colony in Antarctica using satellite images"
Yesterday it was cows using tools, today its penguins using satellite imagery.
