another cloud outage.

I said “if AWS US-EAST-1 goes down, you are going to know” during my presentation Saturday with @3ncr1pt3d.bsky.social at @hackfest.bsky.social on Critical Infrastructure risks.

Outages like this which expose unknown dependencies will be increasingly common in the future

I will be at #atlseccon presenting "Do You Want to Play a Game? How About Disabling Civilization?" with @3ncr1pt3d.bsky.social!

Our talk is about risks in our Internet-is-required world & the critical infrastructure we rely on. Learn how easily it can all be broken & some mitigation strategies.

Net neutrality is struck, ending a long battle to regulate ISPs like public utilities A U.S. Court of Appeals this week ruled that the FCC did not have legal authority to revive the so-called net neutrality rules that were first introduced a decade ago under the Obama Administration.

I've yet to find a mainstream story on the net neutrality ruling that mentions U.S. broadband is a failed market dominated by entrenched regional monopolies pampered by corrupt state and local governments

it's like that essential part of the story isn't of interest to them

mostly off social media the past year. Too much going on in life and a real lot of work projects & travel (30k miles driven, 32k miles flown in 2024). At least I am not bored.

I’ll be at @hackersonthehill.org & @shmoocon.bsky.social this week. Looking forward to seeing my people!

Vivek Ramaswamy says he'll deport children of undocumented immigrants born in the U.S. Those children, however, are American citizens under the 14th Amendment.

Once again, these sorts of things should immediately end all media coverage of this person as a viable presidential candidate. And yet, here we are, because

Oreskes and Conway agree. They point out that when Stigler produced an abridged “Wealth of Nations,” in the nineteen-fifties, he omitted most of the passages in which Smith advocates the regulation of industries where the unchecked pursuit of self-interest can cause social harm. Banking was one of them. What Oreskes and Conway call the “Americanization” of Adam Smith reduced him to the trope of the invisible hand.

Banking was one of them. What Oreskes and Conway call the “Americanization” of Adam Smith reduced him to the trope of the invisible hand.

Stigler called “The Wealth of Nations” a “stupendous palace erected upon the granite of self-interest.” But Smith did not think that markets are always self-regulating, and he did not think that people are always self-interested. The very first sentence of his other major work, “The Theory of Moral Sentiments,” reads, “How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it.” (Becker might have called this a “shadow price.” There are certain things that make people feel better or worse about themselves, and those feelings get priced into the good or service they are buying. For a free-market economist, the price is always right.)

It’s important to understand that this is the way all capitalists think about all the “little people” they exploit; this one is just saying it with no filter, which happens every now and then with people who have become accustomed to thinking of their fellow human beings as food.

31 years ago this extraordinary woman burned her career and life to the ground to speak out against a horrific, massive crime against children. And she was a hell of an artist. A blazing soul. RIP

This last year (post-Covid) my brain has not been working the best. Felt like a lot of “fog of war” happening — limited task/project visibility beyond what was immediately in front of me, usually. Got a recent ADHD diagnosis & meds & now I can sometimes see through the fog.

So that is something.
