Death Penalty Executions Nearly Doubled in 2025, Even as Support and Sentences Decline The U.S. carried out 47 executions in 2025—the highest total in years—despite falling public support, fewer death sentences, and growing evidence of racial bias, wrongful convictions, and political abuse of capital punishment.

More people were executed in 2025 than any year since 2009 — not because the death penalty is popular, but because a few state officials latched onto President’s Trump’s directive to embrace executions.

We must abolish the death penalty once and for all.
