“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.

The Bike Lane Gender Gap: New Research Shows Women Ride More Where Protected Infrastructure Exists.

Please. This is such an important institutional goal, why has Brown University never breathed a whiff of it before? It's a known gap they've had for years? Then why didn't it make their 2023 IMP? This sounds like a pet project as a donor surprise decided to give them money.
Q1 2026 reports are due April 30th. So I'm poking around what they were doing Q4 2025.
In addition to seeing who's donating to them, I like to critique what they're spending their money on. Who are they hiring? What are they doing?
Casually reading thru RI campaign filings as you do on a Wednesday PM in a competitive primary election year. www.ricampaignfinance.com/RIPublic/Fil...
It's reverse Robin Hood.
Rhode Island’s federal court will allow out-of-state attorneys to represent immigration detainees pro bono without joining its bar following a request by legal groups amid a surge in habeas corpus petitions. By @krish-eh.bsky.social rhodeislandcurrent.com/2026/04/15/a...
"There is no justification for a regressive system in which the super-rich contribute less than the rest of us," write @josephestiglitz.bsky.social, @gabrielzucman.bsky.social, and @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social.
DOGE turbocharged the deficit, achieving no savings. The IRS reductions from funding and layoffs have likely resulted in about $861 bn in decreased revenue. The layoffs from actions like DOGE alone have likely resulted in $597.8 bn in decreased revenue over the 2026-2035.
Took bad gardening notes. So can't wait to find out where I planted garlic, shallots, and walking onions last fall!
NEW—I got an exclusive excerpt from a USAID whistleblower's new book that made me gasp multiple times. It details Trump's dismantling of the humanitarian aid agency & his team/DOGE's shocking ignorance to public health.
'Into the Wood Chipper' by Nicholas Enrich is out tomorrow. Read excerpt here:
What if we just cleared Congress of all the abusers and sex pests this week
what is stopping us
who cares what party they are in
This story is both heartbreaking and enraging. Just like the "bleach and ivermectin cures for COVID, A.I. is providing a different sort of dangerously wrong information to people seeking answers to medical issues.

The Constitution and a court order both say that the Everglades detention facility must allow people access to their attorneys.
Instead of complying, guards are cutting off people’s phone access and beating people who speak up.
@mrs-frazzled.bsky.social who flagged the Swalwell issues gets into the “why now” of it all.
So much bigger! The right size transit system for RI has most trips faster via transit than by car.
A recently developed Defense Department program was meant to reduce civilian harm during military operations.
But months before the Iran war, the mission was dissolved as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made “lethality” a top priority.
As MAGA turn on Trump they’re aggressively upping the racist & “hate foreigners” propaganda dial to keep the remaining base from also turning vs Trump.
Brown owns a ton of property on the East Side. Why couldn't they put this where the parking lot by the athletic complex is? Why can't this be in the jewelry district where there's already tall buildings? Brown acts like the only way they can build is by tearing down existing housing.
Brown probably hopes the employees they sold houses to won't complain for fear of subtle employer retaliation. But demolishing part of Providence history to slap a massive building in a residential block is something many care about and are against.
What is the point of Brown University even pretending to have an institutional master plan if they'll just propose to build whatever they want to, wherever they want, whenever they want? A surprise giant economics building on the backside of houses Brown sold to employees is quite the "FU" to PVD.
“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.”
#Copenhagen chose. They keep choosing even better every year.
Just thinking about how Mayor Smiley killed all E Side bike lane plans in Providence as one of his 1st moves in office in 2023. Sure would be nice to have them now.
So the comparisons to Hitler weren’t hyperbolic.
Thought Easter message was crazy but apparently now the mad king Republican congress won’t control is threatening genocide.
Cities always say they can't possibly do it. Paris just went ahead and did it. In ten years. #LiveableCities #ActiveTransportation

Its been a nightmare for the years it was out. We avoided going that way because the detour was so stressful. Glad the bike path bridge finally built. Its a useful bike commuter corridor that connects Providence to Bristol.
Rhode Island should be next to ban data centers! Their negative environmental impacts are enormous.
