I found this: Burghs of Barony were a recognised legal category of Scottish burgh established by charter or by parliamentary act. Over 300 were created between the 15th and 19th centuries. Their existence is attested both in statute law and the records of Scottish local government

Burghs of Barony (Scotland) Act 1795

I studied Scottish Heritage. A Burgh of Barony didn't have the constitutional status of Royal Burghs - international trading rights or political standing. But it was an officially recognised legal status and very common across Scotland. Some town records are vague on status, fuelling suspicion?

@europesheila.bsky.social Ada Helen McGillivary used the term 'elevated' in a small pamplet book in 1976. The attached snip is from the Banffshire Journal in 1893

Well, before that, it would have been an ordinary settlement, but then was elevated or raised in rank into a recognised burgh, with some legal-economic powers, e.g: holding weekly markets & annual fairs, collecting tolls & dues, appointing officials (bailies, etc.) and having a local burgh court

Garioch Heritage Centre

Hi Mr Oak - the best place to start researching family historty information on Inverurie would be the Garioch Heritage Centre in Inverurie (gariochheritage.co.uk) and the Aberdeen and North East Family History Society (www.anesfhs.org.uk/guest-home)

Yes, around 1877. The original was built after the town was elevated to a Burgh of Barony in 1672

Good to see Lethenty Mill, near Inverurie, being renovated. This old water-driven meal mill was more recently a country furniture making workshop before a major fire a few years ago.

The picture shows the Meldrum Volunteers lined up to greet Queen Victoria as she passed through Oldmeldrum. So, while the Queen journeyed through Meldrum, a grandson of Mounie was commanding forces in one of the defining conflicts of British Empire

On this day, 14 Oct 1857 - Queen Victoria passed through Oldmeldrum to visit the Earl of Aberdeen as British troops were fighting in India during the 'Siege & Relief of Lucknow', led by Gen Sir James Outram, whose grandfather Dr James Anderson married the heiress of Mounie Castle, outside Oldmeldrum

Original Saline here in Scotland is pronounced ‘Sah-linn’ not ‘Say-line’ My wife is from there, I was there the other day speaking to heritage folks who were complaining aboit the way its often mispronounced.
