My new book 📕 The Story of Tudor Art 🌹 comes out on 25th September. It’s the first book ever (!!) to look at art from across the whole sixteenth century in England and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Ring of Fire is out now! It’s like the Guns of August for a new generation: the opening weeks of WW1 through the eyes of ordinary men, women and children. And not just in Western Europe, but across the globe. It was bloody, terrifying and neutrality was a sham… geni.us/RingOfFire

I was explaining to my Ukrainian colleague the phrase ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’. She told me the equivalent in Ukrainian is ‘The only free cheese is in the mousetrap’ - which is so much better

Cover of Weeping Britannia: Portrait of a Nation in Tears

I expect you're wondering whether other leading politicians have shed tears in the House of Commons before - and more generally about the history of crying in British culture, and what it means.
Good news - there is a book all about it! bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This is a very good essay, & touches on one of the most important convergences between tech-utopianism & fascism, namely the pursuit of homogeneity.

Homogeneity in literature dulls the mind & sharpens the fear by which people become stupid & obedient.

Homogeneity is a gateway to fascism.
