Opinion: Don't Design Grand Army Plaza For 2007 — Build It For The Future - Streetsblog New York City We should demand a redesign that represents a vision of the city that New York can become decades into the future.

"We must look ahead to the changes likely to occur in Brooklyn and across the city over the next 20 years and plan accordingly," writes @brooklynspoke.bsky.social.

"What if, instead of building for the city we have, we build for the city we want?"

This is a park path where people should be safe from getting run over. Unfortunately, it was designed so that it looks like a roadway.

We need to change that design, all over Flushing Meadows, so that cops and anyone else who happens to sneak a car into the park don't get mixed messages.

The ONLY appropriate time to quote-post yourself is if you're in a discussion with someone and you want to say, "yeah, I was talking about this before!"

It is not a good way to get around the character limit.

If you have something else to say, add it to a thread, or just let it stand on its own.

Dangerous overnight stunts raising concerns in quiet Queens neighborhood QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — The pavement at Eliot Avenue and 69th Street in Middle Village is still scarred with fresh skid marks after a chaotic car takeover that drew crowds and left behind visi…

“This is a big intersection; somebody can get killed”. Yes. It IS a big intersection— which is why traffic calming, pedestrian-friendly physical infrastructure would stop these car meetups before they start. Bollards, bulb-outs, raised crosswalks, etc. Get them installed.

Big Tech Floods Legislators' Inboxes With Emails From Dead People In Support of Hochul's Car Insurance Scheme Several state lawmakers say they have received form emails in support of Governor Hochul's car insurance proposal that were sent by people who don't support it at all — or are dead.

An Uber-backed astroturf group is sending out emails from the dead to support Gov. Hochul's car insurance proposals. empire.streetsblog.org/fake-emails-...

You called this person “batshit” for asking people to drive slower ?

Anybody arguing that a material % of crashes are accidents could demonstrate that they believe so in good faith, and are not excusing drivers, by explicitly advocating for consequences for unsafe drivers

"There can be accidents, but any driver texting near a pedestrian should have their car seized"

It's time to stop saying "gentrification" Gentrification is a bad word, because it blames the wrong people. Don't talk about "gentrification" or "gentrifiers." Talk about what the ...

Also, it's almost impossible for people who use the word "gentrification" to understand the actual dynamics involved, because it implicitly demonizes migrants:

Delayed transaction? Get a ticket.
Found out the hard way what happens if a fare enforcer checks your phone for payment when OMNY delays posting your transaction: you get a ticket.
MTA let me off with a warning, but what a hassle. I asked the guy if it happens often, and he told me "all the time."
Also asked him if I would have better luck with the OMNY cards. Nope. Same deal. His suggestion? Wait until it posts and then dispute the violation.
SO if there's a delay (which happens all the time), you're getting pulled off the bus.
Edit: sorry, assumed this was common knowledge, the MTA enforcer has a device you tap. It shows the most recent transaction.
My apple pay tap finally showed up hours later!! So

If it happens “all the time,” then fare enforcement should stop on MTA Buses until they have a fare collection and validation method that doesn’t punish people who have done nothing wrong. Cannot believe this is still happening.

Terrible idea. Business owners – capitalists! – don’t need rent control. Giving it to them is a great way to ensure our streets are full of a bunch of past-their-prime businesses stocking a bunch of crap that nobody wants.

I cannot stress this enough: Vegas gave Musk millions to build us a supposed public transportation system. Instead he built basically an Uber tunnel for Teslas that only goes FROM ONE END OF A CONVENTION CENTER TO THE OTHER. Literally just gets you to the other side of a building.

This is so good in how stupid it is. Just giving the game away that private motordom is about control and domination of the public right of way more than transport

My nitpick on this design is that the outer ring could have a couple blocks made into plazas so that through traffic is impossible, rather than duplicating a through route of the inner ring.

They didn't cold-call email The Times, as I suspect Balsama did, with some mealy-mouthed nonsense, and I just don't see the news value of giving this uninformed air time to someone who admits she cares most about maintaining her free on-street parking and driving out of town to visit family.

Re-upping my original post because the RFP for a vendor to redesign the MTA's website is still open! Responses will be accepted through May 6 via the MTA's Procurement portal. More info in the 🧵 and I can provide contact info for our procurement lead as well.

The @nycdot.bsky.social & @mayor.nyc.gov news about NYC's Grand Army Plaza is wowsers! I have a 1/2 dozen films on the push from neighbors to connect it to -now- car-free Prospect Park.

After years of advocacy safer crossings & ample green islands were installed. When done I compared 2006 vs 2011.

FIRST ON STREETSBLOG: Mamdani To Fully Fund Trash Containerization - Streetsblog New York City He's finally trimming New York's 5-o'clock shadow.

Very good news. And a five-year timeline is pretty fast by municipal standards.

Also:

"The city has roughly three million parking spaces, and full trash containerization is expected to take about 150,000 spaces, or 5 percent."

No. But what would? Funding NOAA and the National Weather Service and staffing it with subject-matter experts. This kind of prediction-market “reporting” makes journalism look satirical.
