Abortion Ban and the Next Generation’s Family Formation Decisions: Evidence from Romania - European Journal of Population European Journal of Population - This study examines how the introduction of an abortion ban can shape the next generation’s family formation trajectories, and whether the influence of the...

Our results reveal diverging patterns by gender and socioeconomic background, visible among women born under the ban to parents from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, who left parental home later, married later, and were less likely to marry at all.

The immediate consequences of abortion bans or restrictions are widely studied and discussed. What remains more overlooked are the long-term consequences, and how the effects can be carried across generations.

📢 New paper out in the European Journal of Population (@eaps.bsky.social)! With Nicoletta Balbo and Francesco Billari, we investigated how Romania's 1960s abortion ban shaped the next generation's family formation outcomes.

We should advocate for greater use of cohort fertility measures and to encourage statistical offices to publish these regularly so researchers, policymakers, and the public can track fertility trends with greater accuracy.

One thing I feel strongly about is that the fertility trends cannot be fully understood through a single period measure. Looking solely at the TFR can overstate the declines we are currently observing in Turkey.

Declining fertility in Europe: Why Turkey is leading the drop Turkey’s total fertility rate fell from 2.11 to 1.51 between 2013 and 2023. Beyond long-term structural and cultural changes, experts point to economic instability and institutional constraints as key...

I contributed to a @euronews.com article by @servetyanatma.bsky.social exploring the fertility decline Turkey has been experiencing and why the story behind it is more complex than it seems.

Surveys are important for miscarriage research, yet questionnaire design and sample characteristics can influence reported miscarriage prevalence

We compared miscarriage reporting across British surveys with @mccompans.bsky.social & @heinivaisanen.bsky.social - take a look at our pre-print here ⬇️

These findings reveal how anti-abortion campaigns restrict access even without changing laws. They also suggest potential underreporting of abortions as miscarriages, as stigma intensifies for both women seeking care and providers offering it.

After 2012, we found:

- Reported abortions declined ⬇️ while miscarriages increased ⬇️

- Declines in abortion observed across all socioeconomic groups, strongest among lower-SES women

- Increases in miscarriage primarily driven by lower-educated women and those outside the richest quintile

In 2012, Turkey launched an anti-abortion campaign and drafted restrictive legislation. The law never passed, but prior academic and journalistic evidence pointed to a de-facto ban emerging.

Using all Turkish DHS waves, we investigated how abortion, miscarriage and stillbirth rates changed.

What happens when abortion access becomes restricted even without a law officially passing?

With Francesco Billari and @aksoyundan.bsky.social, we investigated how incidence of abortion, miscarriage and stillbirth changed under the anti-abortion campaign in Turkey.
