The real question wrt to the E-3 and more KC-135 losses is why these platforms are still parked at PSAB in the same area KC-135s were hit on the ground by fairly accurate Iranian SRBMs (vs the highly inaccurate MRBMs) prior.
Trump's apparent surprise at the Iranian response to his war is caused by what is an old problem elsewhere but a new one in Washington.
The ruler is in a bubble of praise and good news, and his circle can't or won't tell him anything different. The IC and military get shouted down if they try.
