Citation self-awareness for a fairer academic publishing
landscape
Check out our last viewpoint in Bioscience:
In an asymmetric publishing system, citation are influenced by unconscious biases. Recognize them is necessary for a more balanced publishing landscape.

This is a flyer advertising the monthly Funk Biogeography Seminar series hosted by The International Biogeography Society. The society logo is at the top of the flyer in natural colors, followed by various images of Earth's fauna and flora, such as dolphins and sunflowers. The text advertises the seminar content: the title is "Forecasting like a climate scientist- predicting biodiversity change in the Anthropocene." The speaker is Dr. Damaris Zurell from the University of Potsdam, and the seminar will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 1:00PM UTC. Additional information and registration can be found at www.biogeography.org.

Figure of historical timeline for ideas in the manuscript. Caption reads: "An evolving view of phylogenetic biogeography. Each period (arrow) corresponds to one of the four periods discussed in the main text. The ordering of themes within each period does not precisely correspond to when key ideas were introduced or popularized."
New preprint on the recent history of phylogenetic biogeography, with co-authors Isabel Sanmartín and Joel Cracraft, now up on EcoEvoRxiv: ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...
New study led by Sean McHugh (@phyllurus.bsky.social) now out in @systbiol.bsky.social!
Sean's approach models how species gain and lose biome affinities over time, both in terms of where they *do* live (e.g. movement) and where they *could* live (e.g. adaptation)

Projection of post-drought recovery of intact Amazonian rainforests after the 2023–2024 droughts. (A) Time series of annual median recovery projections after the 2023–2024 droughts. The error bars represent the medians of the lower and upper bounds of the 95% confidence intervals across all pixels. (B) Spatial pattern of recovery at 7th year after the 2023–2024 droughts.
The Amazon rainforest was hit with two severe droughts during 2023–2024. Models suggest that just over half the forest will not recover within seven years, which is the maximum time between droughts in recent decades. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/BKQ150YySOw
