Has the Forward March of Populism Been Halted? The victory of Péter Magyar over Viktor Orbán in Hungary's election has profound significance, not just for Hungarians but for the rest of the world too, argue Jon Bloomfield and David Edgar

Is the Hungarian vote of wider importance. An ex colleague of mine thinks so.

Europeans want more renewables, even if it increases energy bills Public enthusiasm for clean energy comes as the Iran war exposes Europe’s vulnerability to global oil and gas markets.

Huge poll explodes the growing contention that #netzero should be dropped as unpopular. Most Europeans want #renewables expanded even if they cost more (which they don’t). Few would go for fossil fuels even if they were cheaper which they aren’t).

‘The tide is turning’, Green party leader tells crowd at march against far right – as it happened Organisers claim half a million people are marching through central London, protesting against the rise of the far right

How can the BBC justify how much coverage they give other marches which are significantly smaller in size?

The bias is so obviously blatant.

This progress is brilliant but is it enough? Transport emissions are slightly increasing despite the progress. Is the problem largely in the outer boroughs? If so a radically different approach is needed there. I would love there to be a conference on how to decarbonise transport in the suburbs.

Speeding towards climate breakdown London’s car-centred transport policies turbocharge climate danger.

An interesting article about how London is not doing nearly enough to meet its 2030 transport climate targets. And yet London is doing far more than elsewhere. theecologist.org/2026/mar/18/...

The only way Reform UK could win a general election is through our first-past-the-post system.
If we had proportional representation, the threat would evaporate.
We don't have PR because Starmer has blocked it.
This allows him to say: vote Labour or you get Farage.
Because it's all he has left.

52% of U.K gas consumption is for heating and cooking (mainly heating).

The Government committing to the simple task of delivering a heat pump, electric oven, and induction hob at every home in the land, to reduce emissions and increase energy security, should be a strategic national priority.

SUV drivers could face extra charges for driving in London TfL are also poised to increase 20mph zones and cut speed limits on the capital’s fastest roads later this year

Seems like some great suggestions in this London policy paper. Extra charges for SUVs and more 20mph limits. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Going to reconcile myself to the fact that the “cost of net zero” debate will always be annoying.

Mainly because:
a) net zero isn’t a discrete spending line (e.g., you mainly buy an EV for the car bit);
b) you need a counterfactual (what would it cost if we don’t do net zero?) and that’s hard

'A national project to turn the tide': Government unveils £15bn Warm Homes Plan Long-awaited plan aims to help millions of families to cut energy bills by installing solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, and insulation

This will get massively overshadowed today and as ever the devil is in the detail, but is should be one of the best things Labour has done. It has the potential to improve the lives and finances of millions of people.

Zack Polanski: Tax wealth and cut inequality to make London better city Exclusive: Green Party leader hits out at Labour ‘attacks’ on him as parties gear up for the May local elections

London is an amazing city.

But the wealth divide is growing wider & wider with people really struggling to keep up.
