Setting to require alt text on images in Bluesky application

Setting to require alt text on images in Bluesky application

This is a friendly reminder to enable the setting that forces you to supply an alt text when you attach an image.

Lets all do our bit to make this place as accessible as possible! ๐Ÿ™‚

if you want to chat about something sensitive, you can use Bluesky DMs to exchange contact info, but I would recommend moving the conversation to Signal.

Bluesky DMs are private, but they are not (yet) E2EE. Signal is hardened, focused, and does privacy/security best.

also applies to bluesky dms, think of them as unlisted posts

for anything that requires privacy, use end-to-end encrypted messaging apps: @matrix.org @signal.bsky.social

Vitest posts to X that is going to be mainly active in bluesky from now on. And that the community should join here for updates.

Vitest posts to X that is going to be mainly active in bluesky from now on. And that the community should join here for updates.

From now on, we'll use our @bsky.app account as our main feed for Vitest updates. vitest.dev and GitHub have been updated; you won't find any X links there. Let's do Open Source in an Open Source social network ๐Ÿฆ‹

Does this work with BlueSky's "app passwords" bsky.app/settings/app...

The @SocketSecurity or @socket.dev accounts (for example) do not exist yet but BlueSky users have already been pinging them. They are rendered as plain text, see:
bsky.app/search?q=Soc...
So, what happens when an identically-named Bsky account is created after posting? Will the text render as links?

Socket - Secure your dependencies. Ship with confidence. Socket fights vulnerabilities and provides visibility, defense-in-depth, and proactive supply chain protection for JavaScript, Python, and Go dependencies.

PS: glad to see @feross.bsky.social already here ... but you need to create a @SocketSecurity / socket.dev BlueSky account before the ID gets snatched up ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ‘

In all seriousness, is there a moderation tool here on
@bsky.app that would help mitigate the risk of a real-looking Bun account fooling devs into installing a malicious similarly-named NPM package, e.g. www.npmjs.com/package/bun.js or www.npmjs.com/package/bunsh
?

keep giving "show less" / "show more" to the algorithm, weโ€™ll be tuning it to respect these signals better but signals by themselves are very useful

Introducing the Bluesky Altometer:

altometer.atdev.pro

This is an project #atproto that tracks image posts for alt text. It keeps track of the percentage of posts it has seen (since the last database reset) that are *missing* alt text.

The goal here is to increase the #accessibility of Bluesky.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ Bluesky pro-tip: in the accessibility settings, you can enforce that the images you post must have alt text.

This is important for folks who use screen readers. Instead of seeing the image, the supplied text will be read to them instead.
