If they wanted a similar beat, maybe having Pippin or Sam wake up and ask about it would have been better. But Frodo was raised by Bilbo, and is known as Elf-Friend very early on. There's no way he wouldn't have known that one. He might have even recognized its significance to Elessar himself.

Watching the extended Fellowship (like you do) and it hit me that FRODO asking ARAGORN "Who are you singing about" and having it be THE LAY OF LUTHIEN is just wild. Frodo. Elf-Friend. Recognize it? He should be -joining in on the harmony- for one of elvendom's MOST FAMOUS STORIES.

“For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.”
Yeah, no shit Sherlock — by the time they need more than thick socks or footie pajamas they’ve outgrown that cute pair you got in newborn size, so why would they ever have worn them in the first place?
Looking, again, for a steelman view of this. Is there ANY plausible argument that we didn’t just kill a bunch of people to no purpose and hand a giant geopolitical victory to an extremist regime after making it more entrenched and more extreme?
I finished a novella in January.
Then I finished it in February.
Then I finished it, no, really for real, in mid-March.
Then I finished it again last night.
Every time I read through the damned thing “for the last time” I find something… unfinished.
It’s quite frustrating.
One of the more frustrating outcomes of this whole thing:
They trained their super-auto-complete on good writers, so now anyone who uses proper grammar and punctuation will be accused of using/being AI.
And it's an unwinnable argument, because being articulate is literally the lose condition. 😡
Because his lips are moving.
I need to make Hot Pot again soon.
Thinly-sliced meats, enoki mushrooms, fish balls, tofu, noodles, and a clam-based broth. One side spicy, the other side not.
And no matter how many you get, you never have enough fish balls.
Almost certainly easier and faster. The parchment paper one looks like it makes more, and you use heavily-seasoned ground meat so it's more like gyro / kebab meat. I'd use yours for a sandwich. And the internet one for feeding six. 👍
Jurassic Park
Lord of the Rings (all of them)
Mortal Kombat
Ghost in the Shell
The Crow
Batman (both Score and Soundtrack)
Have you tried the internet hack I keep seeing where you roll up very thin sheets of ground meat in parchment paper and cook them for gyros? Seems like it could get you part of the way there -- more prep, but more forgiving on the actual cook.
Aaaaaand that sound you heard was my interest evaporating...
Quoting for Alt Text.
I haven't even read the article, but even just this quote says enough.
And just adding in -- yeah, this whole this is basically "Unforced Errors: The Musical"
(Yeah, I'm just putting my money where my mouth is with my earlier comment about using PowerPoint before I'll use AI.)
Though that is legitimately crappy. A real artist on Fiverr could do better for fifty bucks. And if you can't spend fifty bucks on a book cover... Maybe save up until you can? 🤷
Still better than AI?
Instead of AI for covers, use:
-premades (most are under $100)
-use royalty free pictures/art. There are TONS, especially within museum databases that you can use.
-Get a shitty cover and upgrade when you have money
AI will poison your career forever. Don't do it.
I will make a cover in PowerPoint before I use AI for any creative work.
How is it that in the Year Of Our Lord 2026 there is no easy, one-click way to simply remove oneself from a Reply-All chain?
That… looks very interesting. I’ll check it out, thanks!
And now that I’ve finished writing that story… I don’t know what to do next.
I wonder who’s taking submissions for horror / urban fantasy novellas these days…

Yeah I’ve loved the series since ‘95, lurked RASFWRJ, printed the WOTFAQ at the library, commented on tor(dot)com reread posts, etc… and the show-haters have just gotten so toxic. They jump into any thread, post, whatever and make it all about that.
Sad. BSKY is the last refuge I’ve found.
Facebook and Reddit (and some Twitter.)
Book vs Show fan nonsense, mostly stuff like “Real book fans hate the show, so if you liked it or miss it you’re not a real fan.” And variations on that theme.
Have you ever left a fandom? Just said “Nope, this is getting too toxic for me. I’ll still enjoy the property, but I’m done engaging.”
After TLJ I left #StarWars
Now #WheelOfTime is starting to slide in that toxic direction — not here, but literally everywhere else.
Le sigh.
It was a good run.
I mean… it’s badass, but nowhere near a favorite. More of a “Oh that is very not good” moment.
For a favorite, I’d go with:
"This is Min Farshaw. And she's very special to me."
Or just quote the whole Tam reunion.
(And I'm not being hyperbolic -- I'm already seeing articles from the right calling for Republicans to use those screenshots in their ads for the midterms.)
It's just so. Tiring.
Politics has officially adopted fandom discourse rules: frame a loaded binary, demand visible allegiance, clip the reaction, declare moral victory. The SOTU “stand up” moment wasn’t persuasion. It was engineered outrage for campaign ads.
At SOTU the president told everyone who thinks the gov’t should protect citizens “not illegal aliens” to stand, then whined when Dems didn’t.
It’s a false dichotomy. You can protect citizens and give due process.
They’re not standing for a racist dog whistle.
4 10s is so good.
You can actually interact with the world that is open when you're normally working. I don't know how people are expected to, for example, make doctors appointments or go to their bank when the only hours they're open are while those people are at work.

We boop this kitty right on her nose.
