Posters on a glass wall showing the 10 government design principles.

I’m loving the style of these - thinking of something similar to get up around offices and replace these (as useful as they are)

Developing standards and accessibility guidance Improving services by making standards and accessibility simple

@kerry1yons.bsky.social and I were asked to write an article for #servicegazette about our work on standards and accessibility guidance over the last couple of years. We're pleased to say you can now read the online version that was in the recent print version.

Homepage Everything you need to understand how we create accessible, inclusive products and services in the Department for Education.

It’s in our accessibility manual accessibility.education.gov.uk

I thought I’d put a 301 redirect from the design manual to it, so will check that on Monday.

I’d be more surprised if EE’s app and website actually bloody worked for once. Atrocious digital products.

Have you recently given feedback to a product or service as an end user, about an accessibility issue? Either through contact info on their accessibility statement or other contact route? If so, would you mind having a quick chat with me or answer a few questions?

Mistakes are easy to make were not all perfect. I’ll speak to the service owner tomorrow and get it resolved.

Fear is caring and it’s on the people like me and many others to make sure we contribute and curate it to make it even better.

Thanks Katie for raising this, we'll look into it. From first glance I assume you're talking about the logo image (as its awhite text logo for the usual dark blue background) and you'd expect it to be the inverted (black text logo)?

@benaldo.bsky.social came and met us in DfE last week and we had a really good chat about service Manual and various other bits, I have sympathy with the lack of support and it’s totally on GDS to fund, resource, and properly advocate for the centre if they are to make the impact they need to.

Thanks Helen, we’re talking with Ben and will hopefully be contributing some things soon.

It is frustrating but also we have our own needs for this training irrespective of the centre.

And on working with the centre, we’re having conversations about things like this with them. Our long term goal is to eliminate some of our products in favour of it being for all, from the Service Manual

Training Online training for learning about, and developing accessibility awareness and knowledge.

We've launched our intermediate accessibility training module in the DfE Accessibility and inclusive design manual this morning.

Working in the open means anyone can complete it regardless of who you are or where you work or what you do.

What does it take to do things well? The right people, leadership, care, culture, tools, support, resources. A failing in one or more (often more) results in poor user experiences, technical debt, excuses, and waste of time and money.

Pisses me off when I see it happening when it doesn’t have to.

Valuable time with DfE's @andyjones.bsky.social, @kerry1yons.bsky.social & @debblanch44.bsky.social today, seeing their great work filling gaps in Service Transformation standards, looking at how GDS might do this but whole-public-sector. #govdesign #govdigital

Thanks for the time to join us and talk through gaps, opportunities and the work we’ve been doing for the last couple of years. Looking forward to being able to contribute more and wider.

EE website showing a message saying the service isn’t working right now.

EE’s web and app user exp is atrocious, it’s slow, buggy, and often just get this when trying to do the simplest of things like view a bill. This isn’t even a new thing, for years it’s been crap.

Making the most of design histories At the Department for Education (DfE), all designers working on service teams are required to work ‘in the open’. One way we do this is by sharing our design thinking through design histories.  Design...

Great post from Rob in the Vulnerable Children and Families team about the power of design histories. They aren’t just for working in the open, but help tell the story of changes to a product or service over time, and that all important, “why”.
